Hello and welcome. I’m Catherine Cronin, an independent scholar focused on critical and social justice approaches in digital, open and higher education. I co-edited the recently published open-access book Higher Education for Good: Teaching and Learning Futures with Laura Czerniewicz. I recently completed a GO-GN research fellowship Just Knowledge, and co-edited a special issue of Learning, Media & Technology Feminist Perspectives on Learning, Media, and Educational Technology.
Recent publications include Open education: Walking a critical path, co-authored articles Framing open educational practices from a social justice perspective and Equity Unbound as critical intercultural praxis, and the book Open at the margins: Critical perspectives on open education. In December 2021, I finished a 3-year strategic role at Ireland’s National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, where I worked as digital and open education lead (see this page for more details).
I am a regular contributor to collaborative projects and conversations in the areas of digital, open and higher education, within Ireland and globally. My academic background includes a PhD (Open Education), MA Women’s Studies (Gender & Technology), MEng Systems Engineering, and BSc Mechanical Engineering. I’ve been involved in teaching, research and advocacy in higher education and in the community for over 35 years.
