Most of the Queen’s subjects would be in favour of her “rewilding” her estates, according to a poll. It is a policy that could bring beavers and wolves to Balmoral and wild boar to Sandringham.

A survey of 2,100 adults in the UK has shown that 62 per cent believe that the royal family should abandon large tracts of land to nature or manage them to encourage the return of historic species that have vanished.

An open letter signed by 100 scientists, church leaders and TV nature experts, has called on the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge to lead a “rewilding revolution”.

The signatories included the naturalist Chris Packham, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Kate Humble, the TV presenters, Sir Ian Boyd,
