Inter-Professional Learning
Topic outline
-
Within the School of Health and Education, we believe that gaining an understanding of other professionals' roles and skills in a shared learning context can benefit multi-disciplinary team working in practice. Our students study nursing, social work, midwifery, teacher training, allied health care and integrative medicine and seek through our weekly Interprofessional Learning Symposia programme a rich and deeper understanding of what different professionals have to offer within their respective sectors.
This programme of afternoon sessions provides a range of key topics and is representative of the health, social and educational subjects being taught, with invited experts from both within and outside of the university. Participants come together to discuss, debate and update personal learning, led by a key subject expert, on a range of relevant, often challenging themes.
Nursing students must attend at least two sessions per year and complete an online evaluation for each sessionNursing and midwifery students who attend the IPLSymposia sessions will be able to log their participation as part of the mandatory IPL learning – please see your Programme Lead for details.

The session contains a brief overview of infertility focusing on the anxiety of infertility in the context of current technological interventions. We argue that infertility is a stigmatised condition which makes disclosure difficult for couples. and suggest ways in which nurses may assess infertility and care for infertile couples who disclose and provide assistance with referral to specialist care.

How would you do a thorough psychiatric assessment on a stranger? If you met Vincent van Gogh on the 24th December 1888 after he visited his girlfriend and sex worker and had chopped off his own ear how would you proceed to a Mental Health Examination (MHE)?
What would you ask him and how would you come to some sort of a conclusion about whether he was or wasn’t suffering from any mental illness? How would you decide what is important and what’s unimportant information? How would you come to the conclusion about what the diagnosis might be and what a potential treatment plan should entail?
