BLOG TOUR REVIEW Review for 'The Guilty Wife' by Alison James. Previously titled 'Happily Ever After'. Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Alison James, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous Publication date 22nd June 2021. This is the second book I have read by this author. I have previously read Alison's 'Her Sister's Child' which I highly recommend. I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Behind Closed Doors, The Guest List and The Wife Between Us will be hooked by the latest page-turner from US top five bestseller Alison James.' I am a fan of 'The Guest List' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Alison and if this is half as good as 'Her Sister's Child' it is sure to be an epic read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that

The Guilty Wife is an engrossing psychological thriller that I throughly enjoyed. Just like many people’s lives appear perfect through an Instagram filter, perhaps everything is not perfect in these marriages despite idyllic honeymoons, set against a stunning backdrop. When the cracks start to appear, it then becomes a question of who is not going to make it to the next destination? My dream is to one day vacation in Mauritius, but as I am petrified of flying this is unlikely to become a reality, so I will just have to settle for it being used as part of the setting in a book as Alison James has done here. What I enjoyed was how the story also spanned across other locations including Australia, England and Thailand, so whist my hometown was in another lockdown, this book took me on multiple vacations and was the perfect escape from it all for a few hours. What I most admire about Alison James’ work is that you know you are going to get a really great read each and every time and The Guilty Wife is no exception. Whist It is not as dark as previous books, this is a very enjoyable read. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers, you don’t want to let this one pass you by. An interesting plot, a good cast of characters, with one that is so diabolical, but makes the story all the more entertaining, that is all wrapped around flawless writing, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of The Guilty Wife by Alison James. Pippa calls off her wedding to Alistair just hours before they were due at the Registry Office, and not wanting to face the music, she goes on their honeymoon to Mauritius, on her own, just to escape. She realises that there is another person on their own and she makes the acquaintance of Jim Cardle. Meanwhile, Tansy and Dan and Nikki and Arne are also on their honeymoon at the same resort, and over the next few days, their lives become mysteriously intertwined. Alison James takes the reader all around the world, travelling from London to Australia, Mauritius and Thailand, describing all these locations in such great detail that I almost believed I was there. The story briefly covers the Tsunami in Thailand on Boxing Day 2004 and, knowing someone that was caught up in the disaster (but thankfully survived), it was quite harrowing to read those parts. I found the story fairly slow, to begin with, although not off-putting, as James introduces the characters and explains their back-stories. Most of them were easy to connect with and only one was actually a pain in the proverbial and I just wanted to throw her off a cliff! There were lots of twists and turns in the plot. Whilst at one point I was convinced I knew what was coming, the story moved in a completely different direction and kept me guessing until the end. The story includes murder, bereavement, grief, greed and just a little bit of love and made for a great read. I would recommend The Guilty Wife to anyone who enjoys a mysterious thriller with no gory bits!
