Publisher's summary

Trusted surgeon. Loving wife. Murderer?

Before my world came crashing down, I had it all. The successful career I dreamed of. The beautiful red-brick home where I could relax in front of the fire. The handsome, devoted husband whose blue eyes and charming smile always made me feel safe.

As I call time of death, my voice is steady. My colleagues stand hushed around me, their eyes on me, confused, concerned.

I have never lost a patient until today.

My hands tremble inside their gloves. I slide down the cold tiled walls, my heart racing in my chest.

I have never hated a patient until today.

But what choice did I have, once I recognized him?

And what will I do to protect myself, if someone learns the truth?

A totally gripping psychological thriller that will have you gasping for breath until the final jaw-dropping twist. If you love Freida McFadden, Shari Lapena, and The Girl on the Train, you won’t be able to pause this.

Fantastic story and narration.

I can’t understand the negative reviews regarding the narration of the female main character. IMHO the narrator did a great job of bringing our tortured, pampered, sweet, traumatized Dr Wiley to life. I especially liked how the author portrayed both FMC’s as unreliable, it made for a good mystery that didn’t truly unravel until the last sentence!

Very Disappointing

Having had some medical training I was really looking forward to listening to this book. Unfortunately, I knew after the first chapter it was a lightweight, run of the mill ramble about a husband cheating on his wife and a "mystery" that is supposed to be exciting ensues. Supposedly she is a heart surgeon who can't figure out why her husband would always come home from work late smelling like fresh deodorant and old spice cologne! Seriously?? Medically so off and unrealistic. The reader who depicts the surgeon makes her come across as a shy, sit in the corner, whining, emotional and immature woman. Not even close to the personality of a heart surgeon!

This book is an example of why I will never join Audible. 1. A five minute clip is not enough to know if you can put up with the reader for the entire book, especially when different characters are involved 2. there's no out. Once you buy it is yours unless you are a high ranking member of their "club". You are stuck with an expensive purchase that you can't get out of. A rip off that's not for me!

Endless repetition

The whining, little-girl voice of Dr. Anne made me cringe every time she spoke. And she whined the same thing again and again. In addition, there was no way could I suspend my disbelieve enough to buy into the storyline here. I'm glad that others enjoyed this, but it was definitely not for me.

Good story Horrible narration

I wish i would have read instead of listened. I enjoyed the book but the narration of the main character was awful. It was difficult to finish for that reason.

A Horrible performance!

The story line was gripping but the story teller made the surgeon sound like she was a 3-yo child. I wanted SO bad to finish the book but couldn’t get past that voice. Plan to read the book myself!! Will make sure I don’t get another book where she’s the narrator…

There were good suspense elements.

The substantive elements supported a suspenseful novel. However, the narration was very bad and distracted from the story. The narrator sounded like a twelve year old girl. The protagonist, Ann, was wimpy and weak. A 41 year old cardiac surgeon would not be meek and passive. To much space was taken by Ann’s whining.
Paula was petty, and an attorney in her position would not risk her career so cavalierly, it’s hard to believe that Melanie would not have told her new family that she had a sister who was left behind. I also expected to learn what happened to Melanie’s parents.
In the end, I was disappointed to see that Ann so easily discarded her husband.

Powered through and glad I did.

The narrator was rough— made the surgeon annoying. She was whiny and not strong. I also struggled with the repetitiveness of the story. The same thoughts over and over again. I sped up to 1.8 do I could finish it quicker. Character development was good. Kind of predictable but what book isn’t? Had a whole tangle of webs and a few things I didn’t suspect. Overall, I’d say I would recommend the book— but not the audible version. I hate to hate on narrators but it *almost* ruined the book for me to the point I didn’t want to finish. I’m glad I did though.

The story was okay but skip the narration and read the book

The story was slow and only made worse by the slow narration. I typically listen to my audiobooks on 1.1x but this one was 1.6x because she was so slow. If you want to hear this story, do yourself a favor and read the book vs listen to it
