Abstract:BACKGROUND: The global community is faced with aging societies, which will result in increased health care costs. we have been introducing our International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-certified health education system in Thailand and Indonesia. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to collect data on the effects of this ISO-certified health education system, to extend the healthy life expectancy and to study the feasibility of implementing this program and in new social contexts. METHODS: We implemented the health education program recruiting 43, 114 and 119 participants, respectively, in Japan, Thailand and Indonesia. The participants’ conditions before and after the program were determined through anthropometry, physical fitness tests, blood chemistry tests, brain function tests and pedometry. RESULTS: Regarding pedometry, the Japanese participants took the highest number of daily steps on average, followed by the Indonesian and Thai participants. In the 10-m obstacle walk, the Thai and Indonesian participants had significantly increased times. Furthermore, the differentiation reaction time, reverse differentiation reaction time, total number of “misses”, total number of “mistakes” and total number of errors significantly improved. CONCLUSION: It is possible to implement a program of an ISO-certified health education system, but how to develop exercise habits is important.

A Proposal for a Visual Programming Environment for “Use of Data” Related Units in Primary and Secondary Education
教育システム情報学会誌,39(2):224-234 2022(Apr. 01)
Author:Mizue Kayama, Takashi Nagai, Takehiko Asuke
Abstract:The purpose of this study is to propose a visual programming environment for statistics-related units in primary and secondary education. In this environment, data features can be visualized in a simple way by connecting blocks. This environment is designed for data sets expressed in tabular form, and enables visualization in graphs and calculation of basic statistics. In this paper, we give an overview of this environment, and show examples of its use in junior high and high school. Then, the applicability of the proposed environment to the educational field is discussed through a case study in junior high school mathematics lessons.

Abstract:This research aims to develop the visualization aided speed skating performance improvement. Here in this paper focuses on the skating speed fluctuation in chronological order. Especially series of characteristic values derived from skating speed is discussed. This identifies individual skater and his/her laterality as well as skating pattern in straight and curve. Also, high correlation between this characteristic value and race performance of sprint speed skating is observed. This paper describes one visual approach to help skater's self-reflection instead of analytic numbers which is usually hard to understand for athletes.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to explore the educational methodology about behavioral modeling for beginners. We have been introducing the model driven development (MDD) method in the modeling education for university freshmen. By using the MDD method, we expect our students to be able to evaluate their own model. In this study, we introduce two types of educational procedures with the MDD. In this paper, we analyze the difference quality of models and the error patterns included in students models. We also compare the models that are made before and after the MDD with these two procedures. Then the differences of two MDD procedures are discussed.

Author:KOBAYASHI Yuki; HASHIMOTO Masami; KAYAMA Mizue; OTANI Makoto
Abstract:It is necessary to distinguish between voluntary blinking and spontaneous blinking to realize an interface using the eye blinking. We propose a method of distinguishing between conscious, voluntary blinking and spontaneous blinking, without specific instructions provided. In this method, we first extract a column of pixels of central block from the eye region image and create an image laid out in frame order. From this image, we extract a feature value depending on the movement of the eyelids. The results show that the identification rate using this method was approximately 90% accuracy and we applied the method to switch operations.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to establish a teaching method of singing based on acoustic features of singing voice. In this paper, we focus on Singer's Formant ratio (SFR) and peak sharpness of the Singer's formant (Q-factor) as acoustic features of the singing voice. By analyzing the SFR and the Q-factor observed in pre- and post-tests which were performed to beginners before/after a medium-term singing training, we considered the transition of these values in their growth processes. Next, we compared the SFR and Q-factor values between several singing-voice production types by expert singers, namely, non-vibrato and vibrato. The results show that, for the experts' singing voice, relatively large values are observed both in the SFR and Q-factor, while the singing voice of beginners show a large value only in SFR or Q-factor, or small values both in SFR and Q-factor.

Abstract:Stereo reproduction is commonly used to present audio information to a listener and to control a sound image position using amplitude panning in the audio-visual system and audio system. However, the stereo reproduction enables accurate sound image localization only in a very narrow listening position, so called sweet spot. In this study, to realize an realistic stereo reproduction system by which the sound image is localized accurately even if even if the listener is located outside the sweet spot. We developed dynamic panning system utilizing a head tracking that controls the amplitude ratio and delay between left and right output signals with respect to a listener's position. Sound image localization experiments were performed to validate the developed system's performance. Experimental results showed that the sound images were localized accurately even when a listener is out of sweet spot.

Abstract:With recent progress in computational resources and 3D-scanning techniques, numerical simulations become a practical way to obtain head-related transfer function (HRTFs). Previous studies have shown that the HRTFs can be obtained by numerical simulations if an accurate geometry of the head and pinna shapes is provided. However, the acquisition of an accurate geometry of the head and pinna shapes requires a precise scanning technique such as a magnetic resonance imaging etc., which leads to a lot of cost in obtaining individualized HRTFs necessary for an accurate binaural synthesis. To solve this problem, we have been invesitgating on an acquisition of individualized 3D head model by morphing based on 2D images of the head and pinnae for HRTF simulation. This paper introduces a method of generating individualized 3D head model by applying 3D morphing based on 2D image of individual head to a standard head model (dummy head). As a result, HRTF calculated from the model have no pinnas indicated individualized amplitude-frequency characteristics and interaural time differences.

Technical report of IEICE. EA,113(177):29-34 2013(Aug. 09)
Author:OTANI Makoto; KURABAYASHI Hiroaki; ITOH Kazunori; HASHIMOTO Masami; KAYAMA Mizue
Abstract:Transaural reproduction using a few loudspeakers and cross-talk canceller (CTC) is one approach to reproduce binaural signals at listener's both ears. Transaural reproduction system enables a presentation of binaural signals without any contact to a listener's head or pinnae, which is a remarkable advantage over headphone reproduction. However, CTC utilized in transaural reproduction is sensitive to, therefore not robust against, a listener's head movement that has been shown to play an essential role in sound image localization and auditory spatial perception, thereby restricting a listener's head movement. This motivated us to develop a dynamic transaural reproduction system that updates the CTC filters in response to the listener's head movement using non-contact head tracking based on a depth image sensor. Sound localization experiments using the developed dynamic transaural reproduction system indicated that source direction was perceived more accurately in head move condition than head still condition, which indicates the developed system works effectively; source distance, however, was perceived more accurately in head still condition; very little in-head localization was observed in both conditions.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to develop teaching method based on acoustic features of singing voices. We have examined acoustic features differences and psychological impression about some singing voices with various skill levels. In this paper, we discuss the relationship between acoustic features and levels of proficiency. As acoustic features, we measured power level, sharpness of singer's formant, and duration/amplitude/frequency of vibrato of the singing voices. Also, we extracted two factors suitable for singing voices evaluation by using semantic differential method, as psychological impression evaluation. In addition, an experimental vocal lesson for some beginners was executed. We compared the changes of acoustic features of singing voices in pre-test and post-test. Then, based on these results, we consider the relationship between acoustic features and skill levels of singers.

Abstract:In this paper, we considered a brain-computer interface (BCI) based on cognitive P300 event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by visual stimuli. It is necessary to discriminate between the target which the subject is looking at, and the non-target. In this study, we have examined the change o f the waveform of ERPs of non-target stimulus according to the layout of icons on the display. The result showed that the waveforms of ERPs are changed depending on the distance between the target icon and the non-target icon. With these results, it is useful to arrange the icons according to the change of ERPs.

Abstract:A directional loudspeaker array system based on boundary surface control was proposed. Based on the method, we are developing a new method which realizes sharper directivity by introducing densely-located control points in a target direction. In this paper, we examined two kind of control-point configuration, i.e. rectangular- and circular-shaped boundary surfaces. The result shows that, compared to the conventional method, the proposed method yields sharper directivity in both configurations. Furthermore, comparisons of a directivity index and a frequency response also reveal improvements in performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:The quality of the singing call be confirmed from breathing and singing voice. The singing trainer observes breathing and singing voice, and trainer subjectively evaluates it. Breathing and singing voice are closely related to the movement of the body surface. Especially, the way to move mouth and mandible is important. This time, we measured the surface EMG of digastric muscle. Subject is eight men. As a result, we are able to confirm information on surface EMG for training of singing. Therefore, it becomes possible to evaluate singing voice objectively.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to design a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for the communication devices of patients with severe neuromuscular disease. The auditory event-related potential (P300) is used for controlling this interface. Although the P300 derived by the visual stimulus is usually applied to these kinds of interface, these systems have a limitation in the duration of use and the range of applicable user. Therefore we have examined the spatialized auditory stimulus to solve these problems. In this paper, we firstly describe a basic experiment on the possibility of the derivation of P300 by the spatialized auditory stimuli with two different localized sound. Then, the result of an examination on two types of the spatialized auditory stimuli in two frequencies is considered. Finally, the effectiveness and the limitation of spatialized auditory stimulus for BCI are discussed.

Abstract:Previously, the most common approach for university engineering students has been to teach courses focused on programming languages, and have students learn algorithms in an ancillary fashion within that context. As a result, some students have not attained sufficient ability in algorithmic thinking. Since the 2008 academic year, we have been implementing a course which teaches algorithms in the first term for freshmen, before they learn programming languages. This course does not use programming languages at all. The students devise processing procedures for implementing the problems they are given, and describe them in Japanese using a bullet point format. In this presentation, we describe the course based on this new approach, and evaluate it based on a comparison with students prior to the 2008 who did not take the course. In addition, the problems in the 2008 course covered only a limited number of fields, and some students were unable to develop algorithms for problems in other fields. Therefore a more diverse range of problems was covered the 2009 course, and we evaluate that strategy. We also attempt to evaluate the effects of this course on the course in programming languages which follows it.

Abstract:We are focusing on Head-related transfer functions on the median plane and anthropometric parameters. Localization tests show that accuracy of the sound localization in the median plane is better for lower sound sources than upper sound sources. This paper reports the influence of body posture and pinna shape on sound localization of a lower sound source in the median plane. Measurements using pinna replica show that both of HRTF and pinna-related transfer function have two common special notches which vary their frequencies depending on source position.

Abstract:Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) that applies event-related potential P300 (P300ERPs) recorded by non-invasive recording methods is applied as supporting system for the severe physical limitation persons. We are examining the development of an original supporting system that uses the air and bone auditory stimuli that is not the visual stimulus it used so far but the auditory stimulus to derive P300ERPs. In this paper, we experimented by using the auditory stimulus that changed the parameter (sound pressure level, frequency, and duration), and examined the optimal conditions and a certain range in the above parameters of auditory stimuli to derive steady P300ERPs. Moreover, we considered the utility and problem in application of each auditory stimuli used for BCI system construction.

Abstract:In this paper, we considered a brain-computer interface (BCI) based on the cognitive P300 event-related potentials (ERPs) evoked by simultaneous presentation of visual and auditory stimuli in order to assist with the communication in severe physical limitation persons. The purpose of the simultaneous presentation of these stimuli is to give the user more choices as commands. First, we obtained event-related potentials by visual oddball paradigm alone or auditory oddball paradigm alone, the amplitude and latency of P300 were measured. Then visual and auditory stimuli were presented simultaneously, we measured the P300 ERPs varying the condition of combinations of these stimuli. We evaluated the possibility of BCI using these stimuli from the features of P300.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the relationships between anthropometric parameters and HRTFs of the sound image localization in the median plane for the purpose of construction of general-purpose dummy head. In general, it has been pointed out that accuracy of the sound image localization using HRTFs of a dummy head is lower than that of a real head in the median plane. It is well known that the characteristics of HRTF depend on the pinna shape in particular in the median plane, and there are great differences between individuals. Therefore, construction of general-purpose dummy head which has higher vertical localized accuracy is expected. Then, we measured anthropometric parameters and HRTFs of real heads and three kinds of commercially available dummy head. Furthermore, we tried to compare and classify measured anthropometric parameters and HRTFs, and correlate between them by use of statistical analysis. As a result, we found out effective anthropometric parameters related to characteristics of HRTF.

Abstract:In this paper, we considered auditory stimulations for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) based on the cognitive P300 event-related potentials (ERP) in order to assist with the communication in severe physical limitation persons. At first, our results showed that it was possible to deduce P300 ERP in air-conducted and bone-conducted auditory oddball paradigm using three pairs of stimuli consists of tonepip pair and toneburst pairs with/without onset and offset. Next, we have introduced a baseline method for evaluating a P300 amplitude. As a result, we found that P300 was dominant at electrode site Pz for each auditory stimulus. In addition, P300 amplitude of the toneburst stimuli was higher than that of the tonepip stimuli. Furthermore, the optimal conditions of auditory stimuli such as sound pressure level, frequency and duration were considered for deriving the P300 wave. With these experiments, a certain range in the above parameters of auditory stimuli could be determined.

Abstract:A transparent Kana characters board is used to communicate with the severe physically disabled. In this method, the characters board is placed between the disabled person and the care-giver. The care-giver estimates the letter which the disabled person gazes, and moves the board until the letter is found out. Based on this method, we have developed an eye transfer communication system using a virtual transparent display panel on PC. In our system, a web camera is used to get the image of eyes and the position of pupil is calculated by the image processing to estimate the direction which the disabled person gazed. The virtual transparent display panel is moved like the transparent Kana character board. The system used a blink as a selection signal.

Abstract:A body surface is interlocked with breathing movement and repeats expansion and contraction. We developed the small and simple optical breathing measurement technique for measuring displacement of a body surface. Displacement of a body surface is changed into the position gap from the optic axis of a ball lens. Optical joint efficiency changes with these position gaps, and it is measured as breathing information. Displacement of the abdomen by abdominal breathing was detectable as a result of the experiment. Moreover, the relation between breathing and singing was able to be checked from the abdomen displacement at the time of utterance.

Abstract:In this paper, we considered basic contents of the tutoring knowledge in the training system for beginning chorus singers. At first, we collected some important guidance words of a chorus leader, while observing the scene of chorus practice. These guidance words were classified into musical and acoustic factors from a viewpoint of instructional knowledge. Furthermore, we tried the subjective evaluation test for the tonal impressions by chorus leaders about choral songs of the famous choirs. As these results, we found that the common and individual knowledge of chorus leaders were able to express as a part of the tutoring knowledge database.

Abstract:In this paper, we research the construction of the virtual sound screen which applied the sound localization of the hearing with headphones using as a GUI interface for visually disabled people. In order to make the virtual sound screen, synthesized sound image which has higher localized accuracy is needed. Then, we tried several kinds of arrangement of the sound sources and measured HRTFs of a real head and HRTFs of a dummy head. We compared arrangements of 5×5 small ball speakers on a sphere and on a plane at a short distance between a speaker and a microphone. As a result, we found out the usefulness of arrangement on a plane.

Abstract:Students who have learned the subject "Information" in high school start university in the 2006 school year. With the aim of reviewing the basic information education course in university, we examined the results of diagnostic evaluation tests and questionnaires given to university freshmen from the following viewpoints - (1) comprehension levels on learning objectives for the subject, (2) differences between students who have studied the subject "Information" and students who have not studied, (3) differences between students in IT departments and students in non-IT departments. Consequently, we proved that students' computer literacy improves as a result of the new information curriculum, but as far as their knowledge, they improve by themselves not depending on school educations.

AGENT-MEDIATED KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT,2926:107-117 2004
Author:M Kayama; T Okamoto
Abstract:The purpose of this study is to support the learning activity in the Internet learning space. In this paper, we examine the knowledge management and the knowledge representation of the learning information for the collaborative learning support. RAPSODY-EX (REX) is a distributed learning support environment organized as a learning infrastructure. REX can effectively carry out the collaborative learning support in asynchronous/synchronous learning mode. Distributed learning is a learning style where individual learning and collaborative learning are carried out on the multimedia communication network. In the distributed learning environment-, arrangement and integration of the learning information are attempted to support the decision making of learners and mediators. Various information in the educational context is referred and reused as knowledge which oneself and others can practically utilize. We aim at the construction of an increasingly growing digital portfolio database. In addition, the architecture of the learning environment that includes such a database is researched.

Abstract:This paper presents a web-based distance education system that contains synchronous (live) video lectures, asynchronous learning materials with video-on-demand (VOD) archive data, and question & answer functions through digital reporting between a lecturer and students. It is intended to provide a collaborative workplace to encourage interactions among a lecturer/learners. As such, this environment enables learners to exchange their knowledge and their way of thinking, furthermore, to refine/build the knowledge acquired via lectures. One of the main purposes in our research is to build a flexible e-Learning environment by embedding self/collaborative support functions for the digitized live lectures in order to reinforce much more meaningful knowledge and skills. Moreover, we propose an innovative educational method of a cooperative link between a university and an industry for the higher education. The Industry and University cooperation program is a project of the Japanese Ministry of Education (Mombusho). The target objective of this program is the harmonization of university level educational research, society practice and practical business. The University of Electro- Communications has been appointed by Mombusho to fulfill some specific parts of this program. In this paper we report about our experiences with the introducing of this program, about the framework, settings, actual implementation and first results. We analyze these results and the problems we encountered, as well as offer constructive solutions.

Abstract:Recently, a lot of attentions have been given to e-learning systems using computer networks and multimedia information technology. And these systems have been put into practice in many schools and companies. For e-learning systems, three mechanisms are needed: (1) the administration of learning contents, (2) the tracks of learning history, (3) the management of the user (i.e., learner/author/system administrator). The systems with these mechanisms are called the LMS (Learning Management System) that is defined as the fundamental building blocks of the e-learning systems. This research presents the development and implementation of the functionality of the administration of the learning contents based on the framework of LMS and the investigations of the existing LMS. The developed LMS has been applied to the course underpinned WBT/L (web based training/learning) system. This paper describes the LMS mechanism on the administration of the learning contents. Moreover, this research is the revised vision of RAPSODY underpinned the Learning Ecological Model.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a methodology for the design of a tutor agent based on constraint model. The function of our tutor agent is to interpret the student's constraint violations and draw a behavioral schema of the student's knowledge transfer skills on neural networks concepts. This enables us to generate from a set of constraints desirable functions such as, task generation, hints, and domain application metaphors related to the student's learning goals. We present the fundamental issue of how to represent a student knowledge transfer skills in reactive tutor agent.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a framework based on a sub-symbolic approach for the support of exploratory activities in a hyper space. By using our framework, it is possible to express the semantic feature of whole hyper space and the state of the exploratory activity in topological order. This approach is applied to generate the navigation information for exploratory activity. By using our approach, the space explored is reconstituted automatically by the semantic similarities of the nodes which constitute that space. The exploratory history of the user is expressed quantitatively for evaluating the quality of exploratory activity. This quantitative state is evaluated by 5 indices based on attributions given in hyper space, nodes and links. 7 strategies are available for guiding the user of the hyper structured course. The priority of the navigation strategies is determined by the quantitative exploratory state of the user and the expertise of the educators. Based on the user model, the user's goals and the sorted strategies, the appropriateness of each node and each topic are calculated on the map. Then, the graded list of nodes which is used for referring at the next step is generated automatically. This list is displayed as the navigation information for the user.

Abstract:We are building a casebase which covers actual cases of Information Technology Education (IT-Education), using a management system based on CBR (case based reasoning) and SOM (self organizing map), accessible to the public through the Internet. Teachers can input their teaching experience of IT-Education into the system with the CBR technology and retrieve the appropriate cases from past accumulated casees in the casebase for user's their requirements. By using this system, teachers can share a common knowledge of IT-Education practice. Especially, we try to enhance the function of learning by introducing SOM mechanism of Kohonen theory. SOM, that is a non-supervised neural network, is one of the most powerful tools for knowledge discovering from databases. It has the ability to classify a vague domain for its incremental casebase. The features of the classes are interpreted as sets of domain knowledge using their code book vectors. So we propose a more flexible usage of dynamic CBR.

Abstract:Hypermedia is the software to provide an effective learning environment, where users can acquire necessary knowledge by having access to huge information space freely. However, there are some disadvantages, such as users losing their way during searching for particular pieces of information. In this study, we construct a sophisticated hypermedia system to give some appropriate advice of navigation to users. We propose a user model that represents exploring activities in Hyper-space, and a mechanism to decide navigation strategy with neural network.

Abstract:The main purpose of this research is to improve the classification performance of the competitive learning on a neural network. To fulfill this purpose, a classification algorithm was proposed, and a classifying system embedded the peculiar algorithm has been developed. We conducted the experiments for checking the validity of the result obtained from our system. In this paper, we propose the classification algorithm which has robustness to classification accuracy for noise. In order to guarantee the power mentioned above, we contrive the mechanism which decide boundary lines in competitive layer of neural network based on each weight value of all units.

The real situation of understandings of software learners about functions, roles and interrelations of information devices.
長野県短期大学紀要,(49):27-41 1994(Dec.)
Author:香山 瑞恵
Abstract:For the purpose of investigating how software-learners understand the functions, roles and interrelations of five information devices of a computer (a hard disk, a floppy disk, a CRT display, a key board and a printer), we carried out a questionnaire research. We made the subject of investigation on 44 student sof 15 weeks lessons about the computer literacy, and requested them to answer the questionnaire five times. In the each questionnaire, we showed our students the picture demonstrated five information devices and requested each of them to draw a line between devices that had specific relations. And we requested them to explain the reason why they gave lines. As results, we found that roles of auxiliary memories(a hard disk and a floppy disk) were very difficult for students to understand, while the roles of some of input / outout devices (a printer and a key board) were relatively easy. So it was made clear that, in their stage of early lessons, we had to explain repeatedly auxiliary devices in order to give them clear understandings of ones and to avoid difficulties of them following the contents of the lessons given later.Through these results, if we practice these researches in the progress of our lessons we think that we can improve our instructional design to make learners understand easily and correctly.

An application software for understanding the behaviors of a computer : Its development and evaluation as teaching material
長野県短期大学紀要,(48):p65-76 1993(Dec.)
Author:香山 瑞恵; 清水 道夫
Abstract:We have made an application software for demonstrating the behaviors of a model computer proposed by Nakamura and Shimizu. We have been using this software for teaching computer literacy to beginners and have evaluated its usefulness. As a result we found that this software was helpful to the learners in understanding the basic behaviors of the model computer and the roles of the elements of the model computer such as the adder and the address decoder. Our software turned out to be also effective in helping the learners to realize the necessity of programming in a thoroughly logical and efficient way.
