Introducing the Hero Project
The Hero Project is a nationwide programme run by the blood cancer charity, Anthony Nolan. It’s our mission to educate 16 to 18-year olds about stem cell, blood and organ donation, and show them that they could help save a life.
We’d love to invite your school to get involved with The Hero Project, because together, we can give every student the opportunity to learn about their lifesaving potential.
How can your students become lifesavers?
Step one: raising awareness
Our presentations and resources are free of charge and can be delivered to suit your school or college. They are designed to be relevant to Key Stage 5 students.
- Volunteer presentations: One of our trained Hero Project volunteer presenters can deliver a presentation about what stem cell, blood and organ donation involve, why they matter and how your students can become lifesaving donors if they wish to. Presentations can be delivered in person or via video link.
- Self-delivery resources: Our suite of education resources is designed to be flexible. They can be used to enable staff or students to deliver key messages about lifesaving donation, or to support further activities designed to embed learning following a Hero Project presentation
- Working with students aged 11 to 16? We have collaborated with NHS Blood and Transplant to produce free curriculum-linked teaching resources on stem cell, blood and organ donation for Key Stage 3 and 4.
Step two: recruitment campaigns
After the awareness-raising stage, your students can run a campaign to encourage their peers to join the stem cell register. This can centre on an event, where students who wish to sign up as lifesavers can do so in person. Or it can be an online campaign, using a bespoke webpage just for your school.
We can provide resources and expertise to help your students unlock their lifesaving potential, all while gaining new skills! They’ll receive a certificate from us, which makes a great addition to their CV or university application.

Fundraise
Fundraising at school is a great opportunity to bring the community together to do lifesaving work. And there are so many ways you can get involved, from choosing Anthony Nolan as your school’s Charity of the Year, to fundraising for a month, week or one dedicated day!
