Warehouse Volunteer

Our warehouse volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Our team is responsible for sorting, storing and recording the food we get delivered to our warehouse. They also assemble food orders for our charity members across Greater Manchester. Every day is different and you’ll be part of a fun, welcoming team. There’s something for people of all abilities!

I do Goods in, finding racking locations, recording food that’s come in, ready for entering onto our database. When I started, I thought surplus food meant it would be unattractive and unpopular but I was surprised at the quality. It’s a varied food range, from meats to desserts! At the end of my shift, I feel I’ve had a productive day. I’ve done my part in the chain. I’ve helped to move food to those in need.

Van Driver

Our delivery drivers are vital to the work we do. Drivers make sure our food gets delivered to charity members across Greater Manchester. You must be over 21 to do this role, have a full, clean licence and and have recent, relevant and regular van driving experience.

It’s a responsible role that gives you confidence. My customer service skills have improved. I get satisfaction knowing that what I’ve done today will benefit someone tomorrow.

Drivers’ Assistant

Drivers’ assistants help FareShare delivery drivers on their rounds to beneficiary charities. From loading and unloading the van to completing paperwork and navigating around the city, you’ll experience Manchester in a whole new way.

“My shift starts with loading the van. It’s teamwork between me, warehouse crew and Driver. I’m getting to know the routes. There are so many different organisations we deliver to in community centres, homes for the elderly, even libraries. They help out when we deliver and I meet interesting people. I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile. Eventually I want to be a FareShare driver so this way, I’m learning bit by bit. It’s my way of getting to know what it entails.”

Customer Service Volunteer

In our FareShare office you can get involved in loads of tasks. Volunteer customer service assistants use our bespoke database GLADYS to allocate food to our beneficiary charities, as well as taking food orders over the phone and completing data entry. We also have office assistants who help us with everything from filing to data analysis.

“I love my role. It’s never dull. It’s about helping to feed people and not wanting food to go to waste. So knowing food varieties helps. When I’m on the phone, being able to offer alternatives for meals goes down well.”
Glynis, Office Volunteer
food waste

270,000 tonnes of perfectly edible food gets wasted by the food industry each year.

That’s enough for nearly 650,000,000 meals
