2017 SIA/FAA course delegates. What a nice bunch of people!

Recent News from the HarrodLab:

2017-06-21

Chris Harrod is heading to Europe where he will give a research seminar at Trinity College Dublin, and then fly on to Rome where he will contribute to a FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper on “Climate change implications for fisheries and aquaculture. Overview of current knowledge and responses”

2017-06-13

Congratulations to Elsa Fernández - her MSc thesis project looking at how upwelling derived materials influence egg quality in kelp forest fishes was approved. This project is supported by our Fondecyt Regular project (1151515) and extends our work from demonstrating the existence of pelagic trophic subsidies to examining their ecological consequences

2017-06-09

Our first paper detailing our Conicyt and Fondecyt (1151515) funded research on how pelagic subsidies fuel benthivorous fishes in Chilean kelp forests has been accepted in Ecology.

2017-06-01

Along with our friends from the GEECLab and others, we have recently won a prestigious (and very competitive) Millennium Incentive grant (INVASAL) to study the ecology and impacts of non-native salmonids throughout Chile. Needless to say, SIA will play a large role, but we will also expand our forays into eDNA. More here (in Spanish).

2017-05-31

We welcome Reuven Bender, a Berlin-based, but very international intern student who will spend the next three months or so working in the group. He will help us develop our DNA-based approaches to understanding consumer diet.

2017-04-02

2017-04-02 Chris Harrod is off to Sicily to lecture on a weeklong course titled “A Survivor’s Guide to Stable Isotope Ecology”, held in Siracusa. The course run by the SCIE Center (www.sciecenter.org) includes inputs from Harrodlab amigos including Seth Newsome (University of New Mexico), Brian Hayden (SINLAB) and Andrew Jackson (Trinity College Dublin).

2017-03-29

A big hello to is Benjamin Wildermuth, an undergraduate from the University of Cologne who will spend a few months in the group, learning about marine biology and stable isotope analysis by helping us in the laboratory and in the field.

2017-03-20

Very happy to report the publication of a key paper in PNAS that details a collaborative effort to develop a repository for stable isotope data. The HarrodLab has been involved all along and once developed, this resource will completely revolutionise isotope ecology etc.

2017-01-18

Even more congratulations to Felipe Docmac and his wife Lili on the birth of their lovely son Farid.

2017-01-31

Congratulations to HarrodLab member Felipe Docmac who has won a prestigious Conicyt PhD fellowship. Great work Felipe!

2017-01-09--14

We welcomed 23 students to Antofagasta to take part in our course on SIA/FAAs in aquatic ecology. Not only a great mix of interests, but a fantasticically positive group who are going to do great things!

2017-01-05

Getting ready to welcome the attendees of the course in Aquatic stable isotope ecology: theory & practice: 9-14 January 2017.

2016-11-09

Released first call for applications for our 2017 course: Aquatic stable isotope ecology: theory & practice: 9-14 January 2017. PDF version here.

2016-10-31

Paper accepted in Frontiers in Microbiology with Cristina Dorador, Veronica Molina and others on bacterial community cycling in response to solar radiation in Salar de Huasco in the Chilean Altiplano.

2016-10-12

The HarrodLab welcomes Fernanda Vargas, an undergraduate student of marine biology from Universidad de Valparaíso for a period of practical training. She will spend her time her learning about stable isotope analysis as part of her own research on the trophic ecology of sharks.

2016-09-22

Chris Harrod appointed to the Editorial Board of Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries

2016-09-12

HarrodLab successfully won a large infrastructure grant to develop a state of the art stable isotope analysis facility at the Universidad de Antofagasta. With funding from FONDEQUIP and the University, we will purchase a EA-/GC-C-/IRMS system that allows us to analyse both bulk and compound specific stable isotope ratios

2016-08-12

Chris Harrod gave a invited research seminar on the use of stable isotopes to understand otherwise hidden details of the ecology of consumers and ecosystems at the Facultad de Ciencias del Mar y de Recursos Naturales, Universidad de Valparaíso

2016-07-01

New paper published in Peer J with Carl Reddin (ex HarrodLab PhD student) and Nessa O'Connor of QUB on how environmental stress is associated with variation in consumer isotopic and trophic niche. Reddin, C.J., O’Conner, N.E, & Harrod, C. (2016) Living to the range limit: consumer isotopic variation increases with environmental stress. Peer J 4 e2034. Funded by CONICYT MEL 81105006.

2016-05-13

New paper published with a long-time HarrodLab collaborator Kjartan Østbye from Norway. Østbye, K., Harrod, C., Gregersen, F., Klepaker, T., Schulz, M., Schluter, D. & Vøllestad, L.A. (2016) Head morphology, trophic position and habitat use in the threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus in postglacial Norwegian lakes. BMC Evolutionary Biology 16 1-16

2016-04-11

New paper in Peer J with old colleague Christophe Eizaguirre, his post-doc Miguel Baltazar-Soares and a series of colleagues on European eel immunoecology. Baltazar-Soares, M., Bracamonte, S.E., Bayer, T., Chain, F.J.J., Hanel, R., Harrod, C. & Eizaguirre, C. (2016) Evaluating the adaptive potential of the European eel: is the immunogenetic status recovering? PeerJ 4, e1868

2016-04-08

Great news! Chile (with the HarrodLab at the helm), will host the 11th International Conference on the Applications of Stable Isotope Techniques to Ecological Studies (IsoEcol 2018). More info to come as we get things organised.

2016-03-29

Both Chris Harrod and Claudio Quezada are heading off present their research at the 2016 IsoEcol conference in Tokyo

2016-03-29

We are extremely happy to congratulate Elsa Fernandez, who has won a prestigious CONICYT fellowship to undertake her MSc in Aquatic Ecology at UA. She will focus on the influence of upwelling-derived subsidies on the early life history of kelp-forest fishes.
