The Spelthorne Natural History Society hosts a series of indoor meetings and outdoor events that support conservation and education in the local area and generally.

Throughout the year the Society runs a Summer and Winter Programme. The Summer Programme includes guided walks and species identification events, while the Winter Programme includes monthly evening indoor events with experts from various fields of natural history.

These events help to inform, entertain, disseminate and share information on natural history which is complimented by our volunteer conservation activities.

The Society’s volunteers group have supported a variety of conservation projects around the Borough for many years. In addition, we continuously monitor developments related to the local Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) such as Staines Moor, Shortwood Common, Dumsey Meadow, etc. and other local Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCIs) and offer advice and comments where applicable.

In particular, our efforts at Ash Link resulted in the Council granting the site valuable statutory “Local Nature Reserve” status and the Society has been given responsibility for the long-term management for the site.

Our conservation efforts earned the Society the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in 2018. This award is the highest award that can be received by a local voluntary group in the UK and it is awarded for life.

Members participate in recording all forms of wildlife, the records being added to the Surrey Database. Members are further encouraged in species identification through ad hoc events such as bat walks, bird spotting, moth trapping, fungus foray, pond dipping and annual Bioblitz all serve to reinforce this effort.
