With the permission of the Thornton Family, we would like to create a fitting memorial to remember a famous Scottish Footballer called Willie Thornton.

Will was born in Winchburgh, West Lothian, Scotland, he developed his football skills and talent at Winchburgh Albion, and at the age of 16 years, he was signed by Rangers Football Club Manager Bill Struth. He was a fantastic player and was respected by everyone at the Club. He played from 1936-1954 and also played for Scotland earning 8 caps, his playing career was halted as Willie signed up to serve King and Country during WW2. He was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery on 31st July 1943. 

Willie later returned to Rangers FC and continued to play having a successful career. He was also the assistant Manager to David White and Willie Waddell.

Willie Thornton died on 26th August 1991.

Locally in Winchburgh, he had been forgotten until ASA Scotland researched his Military and Football Career.

Our aim is to create a fitting memorial for Willie's Family, the Community, and for future generations to learn about this local and National Hero.
