In Singapore, growth happens vertically. Condos, malls and financial buildings dominate the country’s skyline, so when it comes to planning for its energy future, it makes sense that Singapore is also looking up.

Today, we’re excited to announce our first-ever renewable energy deal in Asia, with a substantial rooftop solar portfolio in Singapore. It is the country’s largest rooftop solar project to date, and the first dedicated to serving datacenter energy consumption.

We believe that where we choose to invest in renewable energy matters a great deal. When we set our energy targets in 2016, Microsoft not only set percentage goals, but also goals to bring new clean energy projects online wherever we operate. Since then, we’ve signed energy deals in locations like Wyoming, Ireland and The Netherlands, where we have considerable datacenter operations.

Today’s deal builds on that principle, as we now have renewable energy projects in three continents. Singapore is home to Microsoft datacenters that deliver Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and numerous other cloud services for customers. It’s also home to a booming solar industry, making use of all those rooftops and abundant sunshine. Investing in the local clean energy economy to help green our Singapore operations creates a triple-win for our business, the growth of clean energy, and the country, and this model is what we’ll continue to drive in countries and regions around the world.
