Hot Poets: Haiku Futures

Leading up to COP28, the award-winning Hot Poets will be making a spectacular new series of participatory haiku and photography films.

To tie in with National Poetry Day, and the theme of REFUGE, they are inviting audiences to consider:

‘What if the future could be a refuge?’

Each week, The Hot Poets will launch a new theme and invite people to submit and share their haiku poetry and photos on that theme through social media.

This week's theme is Transforming Humanity’s Relationship with Nature

WHAT

Each week the Hot Poets will set a theme taking inspiration from UNFCCC‘s Resilience Frontiers 8 pathways to a more desirable world.

In response to this theme, submit your haikus and photos.

50 of the best contributions each week will be turned into 8 powerful films, released every Thursday and shared globally through social media.

The films will also be showcased at the UNFCCC‘s Resilience Frontiers Pavilion at COP28 in Dubai.

Introducing Haiku Futures | Chris Redmond and Liv Torc

“Because your ideas matter and poetry can change the world.”

A Short Guide to writing your Hot Poets' Haiku:

1)  Go to www.hotpoets.org and take inspiration from the  ‘Pathway of the Week’.

2)  Consider any unusual, powerful or radical ideas you  have experienced, heard, invented or imagined relating  to that pathway.

3)  Allow your mind to follow that idea into the future.

4)  Imagine / picture the world if that idea succeeded and flourished.

5)  Consider what that would look like / how you would feel?

6)  Using few words, capture that future idea and your feelings.

7)  Arrange them in haiku form: 3 lines, 5,7,5 syllables

8)  Count the syllables on your fingers if it helps!

9)  Don’t rhyme

How to take a  Hot Poets: Haiku Future Photograph:

1)  Go to www.hotpoets.org to find out about the ‘Pathway of the Week’.

2)  Have a think about amazing projects, activities, future thinking that fits the theme... preferably something  currently happening in your town, city, community, window box etc... What jaw dropping sites or inventions can you share with us?

3)  Capture your subject in a photograph. Don’t forget to ask for permission, especially if there are children or private property in the photo.

4)  Submissions need to be:

  • Landscape photos (hold your phone like a mouth, not a nose).
  • High quality, well framed, not pixelated or distorted.
  • Where possible 16:9, 300dpi and at least 1 megabyte (big but not HUGE)

5)  Make sure you include lots of sky or solid background colour in the frame, so our designers can fit a haiku on the image.

6) Label your subject correctly with:

  • The photographer’s name
  • The name of the thing,  project, person or  place
  • It’s location
  • The subject’s web address (for people to find out more)
  • Any permissions we might need to use the photo

7) Submit as a jpg or png

8) Don’t submit a haiku with the photo. We like to mix and match different words and images.

Resilience Frontiers

The Resilience Frontiers is a global initiative, founded by Youseff Nassef, Head of Adaptation at UNFCCC. By engaging us in the creative design of the future, it shifts our mindset towards a flourishing world where people and nature are thriving. It is where the eight Resilience Frontiers pathways of change are taking us. Because these pathways moving together in unison will achieve an irreversible shift towards a future of permanent resilience.
