Sutton Fairness Commission: Community involvement for people with a learning disability

Sutton's Fairness Commission brings together local public and voluntary organisations to explore the experiences of different communities in Sutton. Its overall aim is to ensure that the benefits of living in Sutton are enjoyed by all sections of society.

On behalf of the Fairness Commission, Community Action Sutton, Sutton Mencap and Sutton Parent and Carer Forum are carrying out a review of the day-to-day experiences of people with a learning disability when out and about in the community in Sutton.  We want to gather feedback from young people and adults with a learning disability as well as their families.  We want to know about the day-to-day activities you like to do and how easy it is for you to do them.  We want to use this feedback to highlight where inclusion is working well as well as understanding the barriers to participation and what could be done to overcome them.

How you can take part

We want people with a learning disability or their carers to use this form to complete a diary entry, telling us about your experiences.  You can tell us about anything from special events and days out to the everyday activities you do.  You can use this form to complete as many diary entries as you wish to - just use a different page for each event or activity.

The diary entries will be anonymous, although you can provide your name and contact details if you would like a follow up discussion with the Parent and Carer Forum to talk through your experience in more detail. Apart for that, any information you give will only be used for the purpose of this project.  Any comments you make may be used in the Fairness Commission's report, but anything that could make it possible for someone to identify a specific individual will not be used.

The closing date for completing your diary is 15th February 2023.

What will happen next

The Fairness Commission will produce a report highlighting some of the key issues that are identified through the diary entries.  We will use this report to as a call to action for all of us to improve access and inclusion in Sutton.

The report will also help shape future work on delivering Sutton's Learning Disability Strategy.  This strategy sets out how the council and local NHS want to work with partners to make things better for people with a learning disability and their families in Sutton.
