My Story

Thank you for visiting our Fundraising Page. The money we raise will help fund life-saving research and to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Donating through this page is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with Cancer Research UK. I am the cancer care lead at my practice and really have been inspired by many a patient I’ve encountered, who have battled their ailments with courage, dedication and determination. Sadly, cancer is an indescriminate disease that can strike any of us at any time. I have thought about doing something to help raise funds for cancer research uk for some time but hadn’t quite taken that final step. I’ve been happy to contribute from the sidelines whenever I could. I thought about doing it when my best friend Ashad’s father, Uncle Abdul Hannan, died five years ago. He was an inspirational man, kind, warm-hearted and his generosity was boundless. Sadly, he was taken far too early by chlolangiocarcinoma. A cancer that sadly is hard to diagnose and all too often at a stage when it can’t be cured. I thought about doing it after my two dear friends and colleagues who also lost their brave battles to cancer. Two inspirational women who gave so much, yet sadly again left us far too soon. Their legacies remain to this day. In recent weeks however the Alam family’s world has been rocked and turned upside down. My dear little sister Ruj, Shahida Khanam, was diagnosed with a rare skin cancer called Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans, or DFSP for short. It feels a little strange to sit on the ‘other side’ of a medical consultation. I think it’s fair to say that as a family it’s been the most challenging few months of our lives. Thankfully, under the leadership of Dr Morton at St Helens Hospital, the team have provided truly amazing, inspiring, and personalised care to my sister, and for this we will all be eternally grateful. It’s been a scary journey thus far, but the news has now been positive and my sister is on her road to recovery. 🙏 She’s a Chemistry teacher at a college and I love her to bits! As kids I remember her making her own school registers and calling out imaginary children, so clearly her professional path was already set. She’s my sister but also a best friend, a proud mother to two delightful daughters, who’s never let anyone down in their hour of need. She’s a star! We’ve been overwhelmed by support from friends, colleagues and family, and we are grateful for this. You’re all amazing. Thank you. Ruj would like to raise as much money as possible to ‘give something back’. So that’s what’s got us here. We’ve decided to get on our mountain bikes and climb a mountain, so conquer Mount Snowden, we will on Sunday 22nd July! A team on our bikes and another bravely ascending on foot!!! There will be family and friends. Our Edenfield Road Surgery Family captained by Dr Rhodes, our senior partner, will be leading the team too! We will do it! 😬 Ruj’s husband Shayel, my brother Sadrul Bhai, his daughter Zahreen, and my niece Hanifa are joined the expedition. I’m sure other Alam’s will come along too! Hopefully, we will have some fun along the way. This really is a great opportunity for you to support a fantastic charity and purpose. If you’ve read this far, thank you from all of us and we hope you’ll try to help. Thank you for reading ‘our story’. Above all, thank you for your support. Most of all, thank you for your thoughts and prayers. They’re what’s kept us all going.
