Ex-school Manager Pleads Not Guilty To Corruption Charge

A not guilty plea was entered in the Labasa Magistrates Court on October 8 by a former school manager charged with corruption.

Thomas Hewson was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one count of “Obtaining a Financial Advantage” in June.

It is alleged that from January 2014 to January 2015, the accused engaged in acts which resulted in him acquiring $45,448.90.

FICAC lawyer Josanne Pene told the court that there were partial admissions in the caution interview.

Hewson’s Legal Aid lawyer, John Prasad, told the court that they would be challenging the caution interview and file Voir Dire grounds accordingly.

Resident Magistrate Tuberi Cama instructed the defence to file and serve the Voir Dire grounds by the next mention date. The matter was adjourned to November 23, 2018 with bail for the accused extended.
