We are inviting applications for a full-time (or 2 or more part-time) Anatomy Demonstrator position(s) from enthusiastic individuals, keen to help our students advance their anatomy knowledge and understanding in an applied context. The Anatomy Demonstrator post is a developmental opportunity to join our core anatomy education team, and as such should be able to provide students with support, guidance and high quality anatomy teaching and learning.
The primary teaching focus is on the undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) and postgraduate Physician Associate Studies (PgDip) courses, although there are also opportunities to provide teaching to clinical and allied health profession staff within the NHS. Anatomy teaching and learning at the Peninsula School of Medicine is clinically applied, including topographical and functional anatomy and neuroanatomy. The Anatomy Demonstrator(s) will primarily teach topographical and functional anatomy, but there is a potential to extend into medical imaging and histology, given appropriate knowledge and experience. The majority of teaching occurs in small groups, providing you with an opportunity to facilitate hands-on, interactive sessions combining cutting-edge technology, such as the Anatomage system, with topography, working with our team of model patients. We follow a constructively aligned teaching paradigm, teaching anatomy in the way doctors see it in practice. Our spiral curriculum encourages deep learning of subjects that are expanded on, in different contexts and further depth, through each year of the course, ensuring our students are fully equipped to pursue any specialty they prefer.
We expect you to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a willingness to develop your own knowledge and skills in anatomy and teaching. You will be supported in your training needs (clinical or otherwise), with reasonable time allocated to attend recognised training events, examinations or conferences. PU PSMD has a strategic partnership with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust (the largest acute trust in the South West Peninsula), providing the prospect to observe surgery etc, in order to develop your anatomy understanding. This role also offers you an exciting opportunity to develop your educational scholarship and research practice over the year. Our investment in you includes opportunities leading to the award of a nationally-recognised Higher Education teaching qualification (minimum level: Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
This job would be suitable for those seeking to obtain experience in, and further their knowledge and understanding of Anatomy and Medical Education, or those with ambitions to develop and pursue a University clinical teaching role in the future. We welcome applications from those with a Medical/Healthcare background or with formal Human Anatomy expertise and teaching experience.
Exact contractual arrangements will be negotiated with the successful candidate who will have an employment contract or an honorary contract with Plymouth University, depending on current employment situation. If already employed by the University, the role will be included in, or as an extension of, your present contract.
It is Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust policy that anyone applying for roles outside of the Trust must seek the approval of their Service Line Director and Service Line Managers before interview to ensure that if appointed it will not affect their NHS work.
