Iranian secondary schoolgirls have been forced to watch pornographic videos during mandatory sessions aimed at turning them away from an anti-government protest movement that has swept the country for more than five months, IranWire has learned.

Security forces visited girls' schools in the southwestern city of Bandar Mahshahr to abuse the students and violate their right to a safe and respectful learning environment, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

Girls across the country have joined the nationwide protests calling for more freedoms and women’s rights, leading to clashes with teachers and security forces. Some of those suspected of having taken part in demonstrations have been beaten and arrested.

In October, IranWire received information that girls had gathered in the courtyard of Shahid Reihane-ul-Nabi school in Bandar Mahshahr, chanting slogans against the Islamic Republic.

Shortly afterward, a cleric accompanied by a woman wearing a hijab and men in uniforms and civilian clothes visited the school and gathered students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades in a classroom.

The visitors forced them to watch videos with porn scenes, including rapes and sexual intercourses between humans and animals, in a bid to convince the children that the protesters’ demands would lead to sexual decadence in Iran.

Information has recently emerged suggesting that members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and paramilitary Basij force have taken similar actions in girls' schools in Tehran's 4th and 5th districts in the past few weeks.

A relative of a student at Shahid Reihane-ul-Nabi Girls' High School recounted an incident that occurred on November 21.

“A man identifying himself as Hossein Rezaei from the Mahshahr Revolutionary Guards Corps, accompanied by an unnamed woman, visited the school and threatened the protesting students,” said Maryam, which is a pseudonym to protect the woman’s identity.

“The visitors randomly or intentionally selected around 60 students from three different grades for counseling and threats,” she added.

One of the schoolgirls said the incident happened after a group of students had participated in protests.

“These protesting students were then expelled from school for three days. The school authorities brought this group of uniformed forces to threaten us and prevent us from participating in protests,” the girl said.

“They tried to change our opinions about protesting and even threatened to report us to security agencies if we chanted slogans.”

"After talking for a while, we remained unconvinced, and they turned on the projector. They showed us all kinds of rape films and warned us that if we participated in protests, we could have the same fate.”

“Tenth graders were in tears after watching the videos. Eleventh and 12th graders left the class in the middle of the session."

Maryam said one student suffered a nervous breakdown and had to be hospitalized for two days.

The following day, only 50 schoolgirls showed up in class out of approximately 400 students.

According to Nejat Bahrami, a journalist and educational expert, parents from at least three girls' high schools in Tehran’s 4th and 5th districts have reported that male agents in plainclothes have visited the schools to show videos of sexual character.

Families have lodged a complaint with a school principal and the General Department of Education of Theran and threatened to withdraw their daughters from the school. The Department of Education threatened to denounce both the students and their families to the security forces.

Iranian teenage girls were forces to see pornographic videos at school years after film director Mohsen Aghaei made a 2019 documentary that aimed to “expose American sexual decadence” to Iranians.

“XSunami: Memories of a Porn Star” has only been screened for private audiences in several Iranian cities because the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance did not grant permission to screen it in cinemas.
