Teacher autonomy

Thanks for sharing - enlightening.
Really interested in the discussion about teacher autonomy. To me, CfE is the best opportunity we have ever had in Scotland to offer a problem-based, child-centred curriculum with a clear focus on skills and purposes. Unfortunately teachers in Scotland, for whatever reason, did not seize the opportunity to be creative and embrace the freedom given to them which they in fact had asked for at the time of the national debate. This reform resulted in CfE. However, within a very short time, we had a situation where teachers were saying they needed more guidance and greater prescription - this led to a proliferation of documents sitting unopened on dusty shelves. Ironically in the last two+ years we have been trying to reduce the bureaucracy and streamline the paperwork. The Benchmarks have however been well received, although I still believe they go against the grain of the original vision for CfE.
Whatever happens next we need to steady our nerves and remember why we are in this profession - put simply - to improve outcomes for all our learners.
I feel privileged to be playing a part in the implementation of the national Creative Learning Plan and hope that the realisation of this plan can finally support the important role that creativity has to play in our curriculum - not just in nurturing creative skills in our learners, ensuring that they are better equipped for life and work in the 21st century, but also that our teachers have the confidence to step back and facilitate choice, experimentation and innovation in their settings.
