Council recognised for green travel plans

Published: Tuesday, 29th June 2021

Birmingham City Council has been awarded Modeshift STARS Business Bronze Accreditation for its green travel initiatives and encouraging staff to take-up more sustainable methods of transport.

The news comes as the Council finishes a week-long exhibit in the city centre which aimed to engage the public with its activities to improve air quality.

It has been awarded for ongoing efforts to support staff with active and sustainable travel choices, such as walking, cycling and using public transport.

As part of the Travel Plan a council-wide staff travel survey was carried out to gather feedback and to help address some of the barriers to greener, healthier travel.

Site audits were carried out at the council’s central administration buildings (CABs) and an improved package of initiatives has been put in place for Council staff, this includes savings on bicycles through the Cycle to Work scheme, e-cargo bikes for local deliveries, electric vehicles for site visits, a reduction in car parking spaces and a season ticket purchase scheme to provide discounted travel on public transport.

The Council’s travel demand management team works with schools and businesses across the city to provide them with support in creating their own green travel plans and initiatives and achieving accreditation for these schemes.

Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Waseem Zaffar MBE said: “As we continue to work in our communities to promote sustainable alternatives to private car, it’s important that we lead by example. I’m delighted that the progress we have made so far has been awarded Bronze Accreditation by Modeshift and am committed to continuing this good work.

“As we emerge from the pandemic, we will need to support our personnel in making greener, healthier travel choices in a post-COVID world.”
