Commonwealth Games Public Realm

Closed 6 Jun 2021

Opened 7 May 2021

Overview

As part of the preparation for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games , Birmingham City Council is proposing a package of public realm improvements. The works will be undertaken to enhance the walking experience and improve pedestrian safety along some of the Games’ designated walking routes. These routes connect transport hubs, such as stations and key bus stops, and Games venues.

Visitors will experience their first taste of the region when arriving at strategic transport hubs, through to local interchanges and then finally along walking routes to the Games venues. Birmingham city centre will be the first and last place where people will experience the Games. Therefore, with an increase in visitors, this presents an excellent opportunity to review and improve the existing network for non-motorised users, providing not only solutions required for the Games, but also permanent benefits for the city and its future visitors.
