Programme and speakers

Public service broadcasting is under pressure. Subscriptions to TV streaming services such as Netflix have overtaken those to traditional pay TV in the UK for the first time and Ofcom has said that British TV will have to change the way it operates if it wants to compete with the internet giants. This is one of many issues we will be discussing at this Autumn’s conference.

BBC: We are delighted that Tim Davie, Chief Executive Officer of BBC Studios and Director, BBC Global, will be a keynote speaker on the morning of the conference. At what is a crucial time for the BBC’s future, Tim is responsible for developing the BBC’s international brand and editorial strategy.

Channel 4: In the afternoon we will be joined by Ian Katz, Director of Programmes at Channel 4. Ian joined Channel 4 in January this year after four and a half years as Editor of Newsnight. Before working in broadcasting Ian worked at The Guardian where his final role was Deputy Editor.

The Rise of the Global Giants: Subscription services, like Netflix, Amazon and Apple, are now commissioning and producing content for their subscription services, putting huge pressure on the ecology of British broadcasting. What does this mean for a cash-strapped BBC and the other UK public service broadcasters. Can they survive?

This panel will be chaired by Alan Yentob, former Chief Creative Officer at the BBC.  Peter Kosminsky, independent producer and Director of Wolf Hall, will be on the panel.

Who sets then news agenda? Our final session of the day will be a discussion about who sets the news agenda at a time when headlines and programmes are dominated by Brexit and American politics.

This panel will be chaired by Stewart Purvis, former Editor in Chief and Chief Executive of ITN with John Ryley, Head of Sky News, and Janine Gibson, Editor in Chief at Buzzfeed UK and Jamie Angus, Editorial Director of BBC Global News.

The conference takes place on Tuesday 27 November 2018 from 10.30 to 15.30 at the Geological Society, Piccadilly, W1J 0BG.

The VLV reserves the right to amend the programme.
