The TRANSNET Programme, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) kicked off in August 2018 and it has been an eventful six months.
Our vision and ambition are to introduce intelligence into all levels of optical communication, cloud and data centre infrastructure and to develop optical transceivers that are able to dynamically respond to varying application requirements of capacity, reach and delay - and to that end we have been taking all the relevant steps to get going. So, what have we been up to? Read on.

We are extremely excited and proud to get going with the EPSRC TRANSNET programme.
We had generated excellent research outputs with our previous grant UNLOC and are excited to be starting new and exciting research within the TRANSNET Programme.
We are supported by a large number of wonderful and active industry partners on our journey and look forward to the coming months, where we will also be launching a brand new TRANSNET website!

RAEng Research Fellowship awarded to...
|
|
TRANSNET had only just started when our UCL based co-investigator, Dr Lidia Galdino, was awarded the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship for a 5-year period.
Lidia's research project is entitled 'Capacity-approaching, ultra-wideband nonlinear optical fibre transmission system'.
In addition to being awarded a research fellowship, Lidia was also appointed Associate Vice President of the IEEE Women in Photonics intiative, a prestgious role with the highly regarded IEEE Photonics Society.

OFC Conference 2019

Members of the TRANSNET team will be joining the leading communications conference, OFC Conference 2019, in California - that we are looking forward to it is an understatement!
Our team are lined up to deliver a number of engaging invited talks, workshops, tutorials and presentations on a range of fascinating topics related to optical networks.

ECOC 2018
Leading the pack

The TRANSNET team had a great run at ECOC 2018 back in September where we presented a number of conference papers.
This included a post deadline paper entitled 'Sub-nanosecond clock and data recovery in an optically-switched data centre network', authored by Kari Clark et al in collaboration with Microsoft Research.

We are aiming to find sustainable research solutions to some of the most critical technical challenges surrounding the UK currently - and there is a lot of work to be done.

RAEng Research Fellowship awarded to...
|
|
Dr Galdino was not the only member of TRANSNET to win the prestigious RAEng fellowship.
Dr Mariia Sorokina, an associate TRANSNET researcher based at Aston University, was also honoured with a 5 year fellowship.
Mariia will focus her efforts on the project entitled ' Laser Brain: artificial neural network based on fibre laser systems'.
The TRANSNET team are proud of Lidia and Mariia - both valuable members of the team - and look forward to their exciting outputs.

Connected Nation
Pioneers competition
|
|
The EPSRC Connected Nation Pioneers competition attracted interest from over 100 research students across the UK...and was won by none other than PhD student Kari Clark - supervised by our very own co-investigator Dr Zhixin Liu!
Kari and Zhixin presented a demo of their innovative research on the state-of-the-art clock recovery for data centre networks.
The competition recognises exceptional contribution towards the development of a connected nation - and we are mighty proud that Kari's efforts were recognised.

2017 Fabio Neri Best Paper Award goes to...
|
|
...TRANSNET Co-Investigator Dr Georgios Zervas and his co-authors! This was for the paper entitled "Key performance indicators for elastic optical transponders and ROADMs: the role of flexibility”
A certificate and $500 prize were presented at the prestigious IEEE GlobeCom 2018, hosted in Abu Dhabi in December.
