Vincent Leadership Model

Our Vincentian Leadership Model draws on the legacy of Vincent de Paul and contemporary leadership studies.

Vincent de Paul had a profound impact during his lifetime. He transformed the way social service was practiced in Europe. His compatriots respected him so much they called him Père de la patrie (Father of his country). He did this through strategy and action, as leader and manager. His legacy is carried on today in organizations he organized, nurtured, and inspired – the Congregation of the Mission, Daughters of Charity, Ladies of Charity, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and others.

Research conducted by Dr. Marco Tavanti, Ph.D., and Dr. J. Patrick Murphy, CM, through Vincent on Leadership: The Hay Project, documented the elements of a Vincentian management science and resulted in the original leadership model.

The Vincentian Leadership Model 2.0 reflects further research and analysis conducted by our colleague, Professor Ron Fernandes, in the School of Public Service at DePaul.  The Model guides leaders in their own development, and in creating strategies for strengthening their organizations, creating new ones, and for continuing the Vincentian heritage.

The Model serves as the basis for our curricula, materials, pedagogy and organization development programs. It ensures the continuance of the legacy of Vincent de Paul by making Vincentian values and practices explicit and useful to today’s managers and leaders.
