Extra £1.1m funding for Thames Valley Police will help tackle serious violence in Milton Keynes

An extra £1.16m has been awarded to Thames Valley Police which will help tackle serious violence in Milton Keynes.

The Government funding, which will go to the police force's Violent Reduction Unit, has been welcomed by both of Milton Keynes' MPs.

It aims to also prevent young people in Milton Keynes and the Thames Valley from being drawn into serious crime, and follows £2.32 million into the scheme over the last few years.

Violence Reduction Units bring together organisations across local communities to tackle violent crime and address its underlying causes, as well as also funding vital local projects doing positive preventative work with children and young people.

The allocation brings the total funding targeted at violent crime up to £105 million by this current Government.

Ben Everitt, MP for Milton Keynes North, said: "This is excellent news for Milton Keynes and the wider Thames Valley area.

“Violent crime has robbed too many young people of their futures and we are backing our police with funding, power and resources to keep the public and communities safe.”

There have been several incidents of violent crime over the past few years in Milton Keynes.

Last month, five people were sentenced to life in prison following the murder of two local teenagers Dom Ansah and Ben Gillham-Rice.

Iain Stewart, the MP for Milton Keynes South, added: "This funding is welcome in Milton Keynes to tackle violent crime that has been robbing too many youngsters of their lives.

"It is important to address the underlying issues and bring local organisations together to combat violent crime to ensure the safety of residents."

Nationwide, in the first year of activity, initiatives funded by the scheme have supported more than 100,000 young people, more than 51,000 of whom were identified as potentially high-risk of being involved in criminal and violent activity.
