The Briodag Video Class Kit is composed of a scarf, a beret, and one pair of fingerless gloves, worked in three shades of Alice Starmore Hebridean 2 Ply – a lighter or brighter pattern colour and two darker background colours. Your background colours should tone well together and provide a good contrast for your pattern colour. It is shown here in two colourways, a warm colourway with a pattern colour of Corncrake and background of Erica and Red Deer; and a high contrast colourway with a pattern colour of Pebble Beach with background colours of Kelpie and Selkie. The Pebble Beach Briodag is also shown alongside a Persian Tiles Wrap from the book A Collector’s Item, and a Polaris cardigan.

You can find some Briodag Colour Palette suggestions here.

Background colour 1 is the colour at the centre of the scarf and background 2 is the colour between the outer edge and the centre.

Story

The Briodag Set was inspired by the loch at the heart of our summer pasture. Loch Briodag is long and narrow, with a gentle curve roughly at the centre of its length. From above it looks as though a beautiful scarf has been laid down on the moor. This is no doubt how it came about its name as briodag is the Gaelic for a bridal scarf  – a decorative item worn by women in times past. So it seemed appropriate that I should design a very special scarf for the Briodag Set in honour of my most beloved loch.

The inspirational elements for the scarf design were the magical feeling of the soft loch water on the skin, and how the loch allows one to “see” the wind in its surface – changing from glass-like reflection to gentle ripples, dancing summer zephyrs and stormy waves. The stranded colourwork beret and gloves depict the ripples and patterns the water creates as it flows around the rocks. So the light and airy openwork scarf together with the ripple-patterned beret and gloves reflect the diverse effects of wind on the water.

The mercurial moods of the loch and its gorgeous banks of colourful mosses, ferns, tiny moorland plants, heather and lichen-covered rocks provide an endless source of colour ideas for the Briodag Set.
