Tanzania Missions

We’re honored that you’ve stopped by our website. We’ve fallen in love with the people, culture, and landscape of Tanzania, and our goal at Tanzania Missions is to share the love of Jesus Christ with every soul in this beautiful country. We’re excited that we’ve been able to partner with God in the incredible work He’s doing there and to work side by side with our brothers and sisters in Tanzania.

Growth in Tanzania

At the end of 2020, Tanzania’s population was over 60 million. In the next 18 years, it is expected to grow to over 100 million—an increase of almost 70%! Over 500,000 people live in Arusha, Tanzania’s fourth largest city, and the Arusha Region is expected to experience exponential growth in the next decade.

Because this densely populated area has a huge influence on the rest of the country and also throughout East Africa, we’ve focused much of our attention here. We’ve built Bible schools in Arusha and Moshi, which is about 50 miles east of Arusha. These schools teach the Bible to Christians and to anyone in the area who wants to learn more about God.

We established a Preacher Training School in the outskirts of Arusha in the ward of Kisongo. This school exists to train Africans to teach other Africans about Jesus. It also promotes congregational strength and spiritual maturity, leading to their becoming self-supporting and self-propagating.

A continuing work

The success of Tanzania Missions today results from the efforts of Cy Stafford, who moved to Arusha in 1998 under the oversight of the Kensington Woods Church of Christ in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Cy is resting with the Lord now, but we’re following in his footsteps by continuing the work that he began.

The elders of the Hoover Church of Christ in Hoover, Alabama—just outside Birmingham—assumed oversight of this mission effort in 2020, and many people and congregations throughout the United States continue to support the work. Because of this, we are fully convinced that God’s work will continue to grow. Many congregations throughout Tanzania will press on toward the kind of spiritual maturity that results in financial and spiritual independence.
