The offshore substation topside for the Norther offshore wind farm has been loaded out at Engie Fabricom’s yard in Hoboken.

The structure weighs in the region of 1400 tonnes and will transform the 33kV power generated by the turbines to 220kV before sending it ashore. Originally
Norther was expected to connect to the onshore grid via the Belgium  Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) however the developers opted out due to delays in the realisation of the MOG.

The €1.2bn
Norther offshore wind farm will is being constructed off the Belgian continental shelf and is expected to be operational in 2019. It is owned by Van Oord, Eneco Wind b.V, Elico nv and Diamond Generating Europe Limited, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation.

It will feature 44
MHI Vestas V164-8.0 turbines and will have a maximum capacity of 369.6MW. The turbines will be mounted on monopile foundations installed in water depths up to 20m. It will be the Belgium's largest offshore wind farm, generating enough energy to supply nearly 400,000 households.
