The People's Pavilion

In collaboration with Dutch architects Overtreders W and bureau SLA we have delivered the structural design for the main temporary building for the World Design Event at the upcoming Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. The goal of the project is to build a temporary building from 100% borrowed material with high architectural quality.

Completely made of borrowed materials, our structural design implicates zero footprint. We explored the possibilities of structuring a safe building without damaging the materials in any way. The resulted is an exciting building with columns using precast foundation piles and a superstructure from unshaved timber beams. The beam elements are strapped together by metal bands to give them more capacity. They are used to create trusses in between the concrete columns to secure a safe and stable structure, even in strong wind conditions. The glass roof is borrowed from a greenhouse supplier and the glass lower facade, saved from a demolished office building and borrowed from an urban miner. The needed plastic waste was supplied by the inhabitants of Eindhoven. The plastic was converted to shingles for the façade.

When the Dutch Design Week ends, the building will be dismantled and all the materials will return to the suppliers. By ways of borrowing and returning materials the pavilion is a great example of circular designing and building.
