York to get two 'micro woods' in honour of King Charles

Two "micro woods" to celebrate the King's coronation are to be created in York, the city council has announced.

City of York Council has been awarded £39,000 from the government's Coronation Living Heritage Fund to fund the project.

The scheme was set up to support tree-planting schemes to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.

The public is invited to suggest sites for the woods. Locations are expected to be revealed in the spring.

According to the council, the woods - created using native species - will each be about the size of a tennis court.

Councillor Jenny Kent, the authority's joint executive member for environment and climate emergency, said: "This is fantastic news. We can't wait to showcase small scale, high density, native tree planting in York.

"We would love to hear your suggestions for planting sites."

Ms Kent said the plans were in addition to the planting of 4,000 trees across York as part of the council's Green Streets programme.
