About the album

Inspired by the music of the extraordinary pianist Bill Evans, the Pinheiro - Ineke - Cavalli Trio explores in this new album musical landscapes constructed from delicate arrangements and intricate musical interaction. In this vibrant recording, the trio reaches a new level of maturity and consolidated artistry that appears in the way the group develops musical discourse and improvisation. The guitar/bass/drums trio is here reinvented by the hand of these talented and experienced musicians.

Eric Ineke ( b. April 1(!), 1947), mostly self-taught, began playing gigs in late 1964 with people like Ferdinand Povel, Rob Madna, Piet Noordijk, Wim Overgaauw and Frans Elsen. From 1971 until 1989 he was a member of the now legendary Rein de Graaff/Dick Vennik Quartet. He was the drummer behind Jimmy Raney on almost all of his European tours.
Since 1984 Eric Ineke is member of the Dutch Jazz Orchestra that went to the USA in 1995 to play a concert for the Duke Ellington-conference in Pittsburgh and also recorded the Music of Billy Strayhorn (CHR70089/92). In 1990 he started as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 1999 he formed the Wolfert Brederode/Eric Ineke Quintet and recorded the CD's "Trinity" and "Pictures of You" (A-records). With David Liebmann and Marius Beets he recorded “Lieb Plays Wilder” (DBCHR75214).
In 2006, Eric Ineke’s JazzXpress came about. “While driving to a gig with David Liebman in Antwerp, Belgium, Dave said it was about time I started my own hardbop group. ‘You should do this, and ask some good youngsters.’ That night, Marius Beets was on bass and tenor saxophonist Sjoerd Dijkhuizen came by. Marius said: ‘This is what we’ve been waiting for!’ Sjoerd immediately asked if he could be part of it. Of course he could!” For the piano chair Eric asked Rob van Bavel, with whom he had developed ‘a great rhythmic rapport’ after they both had been part of the Piet Noordijk Quartet and the high-energy Jarmo Hoogendijk/Ben van den Dungen Quintet. Young trumpet sensation Rik Mol – just 22 while I’m writing this - was recommended by his former teacher Jarmo Hoogendijk, who had to retire from stage because of a lip injury.
The band’s name was made up by Eric’s fellow musicians. “They decided that my name should be part of it, and they invented the word Xpress, with the capital X. It looks good on jazz club and festival posters.”

Bill Evans

Bill Evans performed twenty-one times in The Netherlands during his musical career. In 1964 his manager Helen Keane organized a first European tour for the Bill Evans Trio. In 1965 came a second tour, with Chuck Israels on bass and Larry Bunker on drums. The very first time Bill played in The Netherlands was February 12th of that year: in the afternoon the trio did a studio recording, broadcast by Dutch radio, and in the evening they gave a concert at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with its neoclassical architecture and famous acoustics. Bill's last Dutch concert, with Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums, occurred on December 10th, 1979, less than a year before his untimely passing in...

Opmerkelijk is de cohesie binnen het trio.

The CD opens with ‘You Must Believe in Spring’ by Michel Legrand. Immediately the listener experiences the smooth swing of guitarist Ricardo Pinheiro. He leaves a lot of space between the notes and that makes way for a pleasant swing. All in all, it is a tasteful CD, which fits well with spring.
JazzinEurope, 03-5-2021

The combination of Pinheiro, Cavalli and Ineke had worked together before, so their combination on this recording is no accident, but the influence of the music of Bill Evans as heard on their Turn Out The Stars: The Music of Bill Evans certainly results in “something unexpected, unique and marvelous.”
JazzProfiles, 19-3-2021

Tight-knit guitar trio Pinheiro Ineke Cavalli refreshes the work of piano legend Bill Evans.
Flophouse Magazine, 02-3-2021

The playing close to the acoustics and the constant warmth of the guitarist offers the music of Bill Evans an ideal setting, faithful to the spirit of the pianist, a context in which his partners, drummer Eric Ineke in particular, blend perfectly.
