Why this petition matters

Started by Carolyn Steed

Nationwide are planning to close our branch in Caversham on 22nd of April. This is the last place in our village to do any money transactions, all the other banks & building societies have closed down . They say there are not enough customers, but this has been measured during the past year during Covid 19 & 3 lockdowns. Normally it is busy and I should know I have been using it for 26 years. They will say we can go into Reading, this involves a bus ride or if you go by car you have to pay Readings extortionate parking fees. There are many elderly people living here who use it & who prefer to go into a branch & will not be happy about switching to online banking or telephone banking. The people who work in the branch are well known to the locals & part of the community. Nationwide made a promise last year to invest in their branches & keep at least one branch open in every town until May 2021, they claim to have now extended this to Jan 2023, but they are closing ours. We are not in Reading even though we come under their Council, we should have our own branch. There are other places on the edge of Reading that are staying open, in Woodley & Tilehurst so why can't we keep ours. If you agree please sign my petition and pass on the message to others so that we get our message across.
