Why this petition matters

Started by Labour Assembly Against Austerity

We need to increase sick pay to £320 a week - a living wage - and make it available to all workers.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is a paltry £96 a week - a fifth of average weekly earnings - and the 2 million workers who earn less than £120 a week don't even qualify for that!

It is one of the lowest levels of mandatory sick pay in the developed world.

This is not only the right thing to do, but is part of providing the proper support to all who need to self-isolate. Measures to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 are still needed during the vaccine roll out - and there is widespread agreement that lack of proper financial support is one of the key reasons for low self-isolation rates.

A recent survey of workers conducted by CLASS workers found that 53% of those surveyed said they were too financially insecure to self-isolate.

We can't wait - we need the government to finally take action on this critical issue as part of a range of urgent action to save lives, protect and create jobs, and boost living standards.

And we need a #PeoplesPlan for the economy that puts people first.
