The crew could be seen on the banks of the River Aln near the Lion Bridge below the castle, where a traffic control system was in place.

A few wooden steps set into the river bank, a rowing boat and plenty of dry ice on the river were also in evidence as cast members gathered to shoot a scene.

The cast includes Star Trek's Chris Pine and The Fast and the Furious actress Michelle Rodriguez, as well as Bridgerton favourite Rege-Jean Page the in US movie which is based on the hugely popular game series.

Hugh Grant is another Brit who has been cast and he will be playing a character called Forge Ledger.

The lineup also includes the likes of Sophia Lillis, Daisy Head and Justice Smith.

The dramatic backdrop of Alnwick Castle has long been a favourite of film-makers as far back as Becket in 1964 starring greats Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole, right up until most recently, Transformers: The Last Knight which brought Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg to Alnwick alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Dungeons & Dragons is being produced by Paramount and entertainment company eOne which is owned by Hasbro, the parent company of the Dungeons & Dragons role-play game.

Filming is in its early days and, with the pandemic having caused delays, it is not expected for release until March 2023.
