Our vision is a world where every child can grow up in a safe and caring family.

About us

Family for Every Child is dedicated to a vision of a world where every child can grow up in a permanent, safe and caring family, supported by temporary, quality alternative care where needed. Fundamentally, we are driven by three strategic goals: 🌐 Enabling children to grow up in permanent, safe and caring families, and 🌐 Ensuring a range of high-quality alternative care choices 🌐 Taking steps to prevent children from having to live outside of any adult care, without the care of families or other carers, and in the interim protecting these boys and girls We are an alliance of national member organisations (local civil society organisations) which has grown to a network of now over 47 members in 38 countries around the world. Family for Every Child was developed to demonstrate a different way of doing international collaboration. It is premised on the importance of diverse and contextually informed knowledge from all parts of the globe being given equal value internationally. Although our members all grow independently, they are connected by a shared “root” system, tended to by a small team of Family for Every Child staff (the Secretariat). This makes each member more effective, and the network as a whole more resilient, because together, we’re more than the sum of our parts. We believe in collective leadership and working horizontally bringing together our member organisations, our Secretariat and our Boards. We are committed to becoming a model of ways of working that starts to decolonise the sector. We are determined to improve as an Alliance on this journey. Ours is a “future focused” model that will facilitate growth, change and impact in a sustainable way. We connect online, and have no physical offices. The majority of our governing body of trustees that forms the international Family for Every Child Board are members themselves.

Did you know that we run a global platform, entirely dedicated to connecting people who are working to improve the lives of children and families? We know this: people working in local civil society have a rich and unique understanding of what works to support the most vulnerable children and families in their communities, but don’t always have the channels, resources or spaces to share their expertise and achieve wider change. Enter: Changemakers for children – a safe online space for our global community of practitioners, civil society organisations and other changemakers. It's where it all happens – connections, communication, collaboration, research sharing, webinars, job opportunities and so, so much more. This community is over 4,000 members strong. This campaign, aimed at addressing sexual violence against boys, has been made possible by the dedication and collaboration of numerous stakeholders, including boys themselves, parents, communities, social workers, CSOs, networks, and our strategic partners. To dive deeper into the initial insights from the campaign, we invite you to read the insightful piece penned by our Senior International Programme Advisor. Our Family Frontline Fund is a new approach to delivering emergency aid – to local organisations in our network, who are already on the ground, working in the communities, delivering aid in the midst of sudden disasters. As summed up by our CEO Amanda Griffith: "Climate change is leading to a whole raft of emergencies such as wildfires, flooding, droughts and hurricanes, whilst conflicts are on the rise. However, these aren’t always large-scale national emergencies. In fact they are often localised events. As a result they don’t trigger a national let alone an international response. It is often the most vulnerable and marginalised communities that are impacted hardest by these events. The result is further hardship, loss of livelihoods and homes, disrupted education, health risks and poor mental health etc.. Local organisations already working in these communities are used to pivoting to these new contexts. They switch to providing blankets, food, psychosocial support, access to education materials and mobile health services for example." Climate change is leading to a whole raft of emergencies such as wildfires, flooding, droughts and hurricanes, whilst conflicts are on the rise. They switch to providing blankets, food, psychosocial support, access to education materials and mobile health services for example. As we saw with COVID, local organisations are uniquely placed to respond rapidly to emergencies and disasters, they have the relationships with the communities so they are the first to be alerted to the emerging needs, they speak the local language and they know how the local and national systems function and have networks with all the local actors. This means they can instigate a timely and appropriate response. However so often they do not have access to resources to fully respond. If it is a major disaster they have to wait for the national and international humanitarian machinery to kick into action. Despite the Grand Bargain and a lot of discussions about localisation, the local organisations may not be part of these large scale disaster response mechanisms and risk being marginalised once a response is mounted. Many times the disaster doesn’t lead to a national or international response and the local organisations struggle to repurpose their resources to respond as best they can. To test a new approach we. are launching a Frontline Fund. This will be available to the local organisations who are members of our alliance to access. The aim will be to get funds to the frontline as quickly as possible, especially for smaller scale responses. We believe this will demonstrate that local leadership makes all the difference. To find out more visit our website https://lnkd.in/ePP8H7E4 We would love to hear about other truly local emergency response initiatives.

Today, on the International Day of Families, we celebrate families in all forms and recognise the diversity of family structures and relationships. For the millions of children who cannot be cared for by their parents, care by the extended family or friends of the family offers the best chance of a home. It allows children to be looked after by someone they know and gives them a sense of belonging. This is known as kinship care. Kinship care is the most used and preferred form of care outside parental care. Yet kinship caregivers often take on major responsibilities with limited support. That's why we're spotlighting new guidance, produced by Family For Every Child, on supporting kinship care  https://lnkd.in/eRr-gwCF Using lessons learned from practitioners around the world, it's a comprehensive guide on the needs of kinship care families and the policies and practices required to ensure all children have the opportunity to grow up in a nurturing and safe family environment. #internationaldayoffamilies #newpublication #kinshipcare #families

On 15 May, the world observes the International Day of Families In an increasingly uncertain world, impacted by conflict, more severe natural disasters and a growing population, children are at risk, and they need a supportive, caring family structure around them. Often, this takes on the shape of informal kinship care. On this International Day of Families, we stand together with the global community to celebrate the family structure and the different shapes and forms that it can take in the face of adversity. As a global alliance: 🌱 We want to draw attention to the importance of kinship care, and the role that kinship care plays in our global efforts to mitigate and navigate the impacts of climate change 🌱 In all aspects of climate change research, especially when it comes to navigating emergency situations and looking after displaced children, kinship care needs to be included 🌱 We need to encourage enhanced support for kinship care in climate change mitigation, emergency response, and disaster risk reduction strategies 🌱 Children and young people need to be made aware of the rights that they have to be looked after and cared for, no matter the context of their situation Let's ensure that a kinship care approach is prioritised and recognised during emergency periods, even with the enormous pressure placed on families. Every child deserves a safe and caring environment. We live in a world full of challenges, but children are the future and every single child deserves the chance to thrive.
