📢 On International Family Day, we were delighted to raise the voice of mothers as part of a French mission backed by Prime Minister Gabriel Attal in support of single-parent families. MMM, as part of the advisory committee, will bring its expertise from the French field and proposals from other European countries. In addition to the mission and many other issues that concern mothers, we will continue to push for flexible parental leave that gives families freedom of choice.

  • "Maternal health serves as a barometer of the broader health of a country, and it is clear that the health systems in the U.S. must be strengthened to withstand future shocks." Every Mother Counts The month of May sees multiple #MothersDays across the globe. There is no better way to celebrate them, no matter where in the world they are, than to keep working on prioritising and advancing maternal health and birth equity across the board. Pregnancy and childbirth should be a time for celebration, not grief.

While the maternal mortality rate (MMR) for the United States reported last week by the CDC represents a significant decline since 2021, maternal mortality due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth in this country remains unacceptably high. When it comes to maternal mortality, the U.S. continues to operate in a class of its own. Healthcare spending in this country is among the highest in the world yet the rate of maternal deaths exceeds most high-resource countries and stark racial disparities persist. We also know that this data likely represents an undercount. It does not capture pregnancy-related deaths that occur in the late postpartum period, when we know that approximately one-third of deaths occur. Nor does it capture the impact of restrictive abortion policies as evidence is already emerging suggesting that the Dobbs decision has negatively impacted maternal health. The data reinforces what we already know: that women and children are disproportionately affected in times of crisis. The MMR spike observed in 2021 underscores how the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the existing maternal health crisis. Maternal health serves as a barometer of the broader health of a country, and it is clear that the health systems in the U.S. must be strengthened to withstand future shocks. The vast majority of maternal deaths are preventable. To continue to reduce pregnancy-related mortality in the U.S., Every Mother Counts reaffirms the need to prioritize maternal health across all policies, support community-led efforts to advance maternal health and birth equity, and transform our health systems to ensure accessible, equitable, and respectful maternity care for all.

Inaugurated by the Belgian Minister for Social Integration and Poverty Alleviation, Karine Lalieux, the event provided a timely opportunity for stakeholders to assess the progress of the European Child Guarantee, adopted by the EU Council in June 2021. The event, which included representatives of the EU Commission, the EU Parliament, Child Guarantee national coordinators, and NGOs (specifically members of the Alliance for Investing in Children of which MMM is a member), focussed on Member States' initiatives to ensure access to quality education, healthcare, adequate nutrition and housing. The Alliance presented its joint statement, emphasising the pivotal role of national social safety nets and the European Child Guarantee in combating child and family poverty. 👉🏻 Over the last few years, child poverty has been exacerbated and disproportionately affected vulnerable families and children. 👉🏻 Children from marginalised groups, including Roma and other racialised children, those in institutional care, single-parent households, children with disabilities, and children with a migrant background, are particularly vulnerable to poverty and its consequences. 👉🏻 We still lack adequate funding, robust and disaggregated data collection, integration with broader EU instruments, and stakeholder engagement. 👉🏻 Investing in children and their families to lift them out of poverty is crucial to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty – we need to invest in both the child and the family today. • 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝐬𝐭, 𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐚𝐲. ❗️Worldwide, maternal depression is the most common serious health complication of maternity and the leading cause of maternal death. 1 in 5 women has a diagnosed mental health condition, compared to 1 in 8 men. ❗️Research shows that the mental health of the mother impacts the physical and mental health of the baby, and stress, trauma, and other mental health conditions is transmitted across generations. ❗️This and other mental health problems in pregnancy and postnatally result in huge human and economic costs for this generation. Untreated perinatal depression total life costs, is estimated at 9.21 billions of euros, of which 28% are costs related to the mother and 72% are costs related to the child (Bauer et al 2016). ❗️It is still a neglected area of investment in services and research. Here at MMM we're doing our bit: 👉🏻 Active participation in the European Commission's new initiative to improve the mental health of all Europeans, advocating for urgent recognition and treatment of postnatal depression and maternity-related mental health problems. 👉🏻 Active participation in the "𝐖𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞" (𝐖𝐋𝐄) 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭, a pioneering initiative to promote family well-being and the mental health of parents and children. 👉🏻 Active participation in the development of "Guidelines for the prevention, detection and treatment of perinatal maternal depression" as part of the EU cost action Riseup-PPD. 👉🏻 Listening to our members around the globe and raising their demands and needs. Around mental health, the needs are the same in Africa, South America, Asia and Europe. As highlighted by Runa Khan, who heads up our grass roots member Friendship NGO in Bangladesh: “𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬. • 📣 Delighted to join forces with KISANY Social Enterprise. As strong believers in the vital role of mothers in society and the need to invest in them, KISANY will be a sterling addition to our existing member’s network of grassroots organisations around the world, providing further powerful proof of our mission: advocating for recognition and support of mothers as changemakers to help make the world a better place. 👉🏻 The KISANY values deeply resonate with ours. With a team of 126 artisans (embroiderers and tailors), 89 of whom are mothers, single mothers, or grandmothers, they are committed to transforming lives through work, in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. 👉🏻 These extraordinary women, often faced with major challenges such as violence and lack of education, have, thanks to KISANY, found a path to independence and dignity. Every day, they prove that supporting motherhood is a powerful driver of social change. 👏🏻 In celebration of this partnership across the whole month of May, KISANY will be donating 10% of all its online proceeds in support of our advocacy work to benefit mothers wherever they may be. https://lnkd.in/gyJsrAZc

  • Every mother and her child, no matter their background, must have the right to adequate health care, as demonstrated by this The Guardian opinion piece. "𝐀 𝐔𝐍 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐬, 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡, 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡." The issue of lack of coverage for mothers because of their colour, ethnic background, religious affiliation, economic situation is plaguing societies all over the world. We at MMM consistently say this shouldn’t be the case. The Elephant Collective movement – made up of a group of midwives, families, birth activists, including our member association Irish Maternity Network, and lawyers - has been advocating since 2015 for strengthening the care in maternity services to reduce the numbers of maternal deaths. Their efforts brought about a new Act, the Coroners (Amendment) 2019 Act, which was passed in full by the Irish government and enacted at the beginning of 2020. This law makes reporting and inquests into all maternal deaths mandatory, a huge step in the right direction in preventing women dying in child birth for not receiving timely or adequate maternal health care. ❗ Due to this law, the investigations in Ireland showed a disproportionate number of women of colour were dying because they were not receiving the care that was being offered to other women. We support these key messages from the Collective: 📣 Pregnant women have the right to universal access to good quality maternal health care and it is the duty of all countries to remove the barriers that prevent this from happening. Furthermore, to reduce the number of maternal deaths, states need to invest in care in their maternity services 📣 We all (families, civil society organisations, policymakers) have to advocate for this to be achieved 📣 All EU countries need to pass legislation for mandatory inquests into maternal deaths and to strengthen the care in their maternity services to reduce numbers of maternal deaths #maternalhealthcare #parenthood https://lnkd.in/esSPHN5Y
