Ombudspersons and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) are crucial to ensure that human rights commitments are translated into reality. They carry out the often arduous, yet essential, tasks of protecting against abuse of power and injustice— by ensuring that governance becomes more transparent and accountable. Supporting the rule of law, including empowering Ombudspersons and NHRIs is in the best interest of every State: not least because ending impunity and properly addressing people’s grievances minimizes the risk of insecurity and conflict. https://lnkd.in/e_TpWc8e GANHRI (Global Alliance Of National Human Rights Institutions)

Migration is the history of humanity; an intrinsic part of our shared human experience. Yet today, hundreds of thousands of migrants are being stripped of their human rights in transit and borders. Their suffering is not an inevitability. It is manufactured. It results from systems of governance that give greater priority to political point-scoring than to human rights and dignity. Migration governance must include regular pathways that allow people to travel safely, and to access essential services. Saving lives and protecting the fundamental human rights of all of our fellow human beings must be the foremost priority for all and is essential to upholding the values we all share. Our commitment to human rights cannot be about signatures on paper, it must be about action. All of us need to stand up, speak out, and demand justice for people in vulnerable situations.   #StandUp4Migrants 👉 https://lnkd.in/eRpYfhbk

Conflicts are raging around the world, with a profound toll on millions of people. Poverty and hunger are spiraling out of control, with 309 million people now facing acute levels of food insecurity. Economic disparities shot up during the pandemic and remain perilously high. Climate change is accelerating, further fueling a triple planetary crisis that is threatening our future. Unregulated development and deployment of new technologies, with no global architecture to manage and address their impact, are gravely threatening human rights.    Meanwhile, international cooperation is being battered – by disputes; by an absence of trust; and by the failure to act on our shared responsibility to each other, and to future generations.   This is a war on human rights - and it must stop.    These unprecedented and interlocking crises are not inevitable. It is not too late to build a more peaceful, just, sustainable, and prosperous world – if we set aside partisan politics and prioritise the right to development for all.  👉 https://lnkd.in/ewGC6yre

Journalists must be able to do their job freely & safely. No matter where, no matter what. Yet, threats & acts of violence are part of daily life for journalists in Central America. It's essential that Governments recognise that there is no progress without a free press. - Alberto Brunori, UN Human Rights Representative of Regional Office for Central America and the Caribbean (ROCA). Our plan to build a safe & just future for every community on Earth - the #SDGAgenda - is being shattered.     To course correct, government & business leaders must listen to frontline voices & harness civil society's expertise & creativity.   It's crucial so we make informed decisions for the future of humanity.   #2024UNSC
