The science behind the development and assessment of our smoke-free products was inspired by practices used in the pharmaceutical industry for the development of new drugs, and is aligned to the draft guidance on Modified Risk Tobacco Product Applications issued by U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) Center for Tobacco Products in 2012.
We are committed to sharing our results as the development and scientific assessment of our smoke-free products advance. Read our findings, along with the supporting peer-reviewed articles, presentations, and registered clinical trials for reference.
There are 1,586 scientists, engineers, technicians, and support staff working in PMI R&D*. We regularly publish our results and present at scientific and regulatory conferences.

We welcome and encourage independent research on our smoke-free products and our methods and results. We also collaborate with experts to verify our methods on specific scientific topics such as combustion.
We have dedicated significant resources to the development and scientific assessment of smoke-free products with the ambition of providing adult smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke with less harmful alternatives to cigarettes.
