On 25th January 1888, the Great Yarmouth branch of the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society
was formed. On 27th February 1953, the Society became independent and its name was changed to the
Great Yarmouth and District Archaeological Society. At the Annual General Meeting on 15th May 2009,
it was decided to change the Society’s name to the Great Yarmouth Local History and Archaeological
Society in order to reflect members’ changing interests.
The aims of the Society are: to encourage the study of history and archaeology, especially in the Great
Yarmouth district; and to secure the preservation and conservation of historic buildings and
monuments within the town and district.
Its activities include lectures in Christchurch, Deneside, Great Yarmouth, at 7.30pm, on the third Friday
of each month, January to May and September to December. The lectures are on local and national,
historical and archaeological topics.
At least two excursions are organised each summer, including a coach trip to a place of interest in East
Anglia, and an evening visit to a village or a site.
The Society’s journal is a compilation of articles, written mostly by local people on mainly local
historical and archaeological topics, and is published each autumn. Monographs are also periodically
published.
The Society produces a quarterly newsletter, giving news, articles and notices of events, which is sent
out by email or post.

The Society also erects blue plaques around the district to commemorate buildings, people or events of
general interest.

 PREFACE

With the expansion of Great Yarmouth outside the Medieval town walls in the mid-nineteenth century, individual
builders built terrace houses and numbered them. In due course roads and streets in the town were filled with
named terraces, which became people’s addresses. So finding their address today can be difficult. Very few of the
names attached to the terraces survive and only three have been noted so far.
Eventually, the collection of terraces caused confusion and on 22nd April 1871, the Great Yarmouth Local Board of
Health decided that:
• The roads from Fuller’s Hill to Rampart Row to be named Northgate Street and from Rampart Row
northward, Caister Road.
• That St. Nicholas’ Road extends from Market Road to Nelson Road North.
• From Nelson Road North to Marine Parade North to be Euston Road.
• Market Road to extend from the Market Place to Nelson Road North.
• Regent Road to extend from King Street to Marine Parade.
• From Regent Street to St. George’s Road to be called Apsley Road.
• From Regent Road running north to be called Nelson Road North.
• From Regent Road running south to Florence Place to be called Nelson Road.
• From Florence Place to Queen’s Road to be called Nelson Road South.
• It was resolved by the Board that all roads running from the town in an easterly direction be numbered
starting from the west end on the north side.
• All roads running north or south to be numbered as they radiate from the town centre beginning on the left
hand side in all cases.
• That the numbering of houses in Caister Road to be discontinued at the north side of the workhouse
boundary.
Thus, a degree of order came to addresses and street names. For example, Blenheim Place and Columbia Terrace
were absorbed into Apsley Road.

There is in existence a street map dated 1884/85 of Great Yarmouth (scale: 10.56 feet to one mile), which is very
useful for finding terraces, some individual properties, public houses, hotels, etc. Many of the terraces and streets
have disappeared following bombing in the Second World War and slum clearance.
Parts of this map have been scanned into strips for this volume as an aid to researching the history of Great
Yarmouth. Scanning the map has been problematic due to the fragility of some of the pages and the loss of the
map in the binding. Unforunately, a few pieces of the map are missing; for example Hall Plain and its surrounds.
The compass points are approximate.
