Shock figures reveal 15 NHS chief executives were paid £250,000 or more in 2018

FIFTEEN NHS trust chief execs were paid annual salaries of more than £250,000 last year, figures show.

Their pay is more than the £150,000 earned by Theresa May despite some only running a district general hospital.

Critics last night described the eye-watering sums as "shocking" and called for more effective scrutiny.

Some with a turnover of less than £300million pocketed more than others running trusts raking in over £1billion.

The best paid was on £315,000 a year and one chief exec was paid £1 for every £1,000 their trust earned.

The figures, for the year 2017/18, were revealed by the Health Service Journal.

John O'Connell, from the Taxpayers' Alliance, said: "These figures are truly shocking. The vast discrepancies between trusts and their chief executives' pay to turnover ratio speaks volumes about the inconsistent approach to spending we hear about all too often in the NHS.

"More effective corporate governance needs to be put in place at trusts to ensure this kind of largesse is prevented from happening in the first place."

NHS trusts defended their salaries, saying they were a fair market rate and needed to retain the best healthcare leaders.
