For the past 60 years, rock and pop has been dominated by men. There have been plenty of women along the way, but look at the biggest names from each decade. Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Coldplay . . . all men. Until now.

Whether due to growing confidence, a greater equality between the sexes or a general feeling that we have enough old geezers messing things up in current affairs and we don’t need them messing up music too, this has been the year that women have taken centre stage.
