A ban on sales of new diesel and petrol cars should be brought forward a decade to 2030, according to groups representing 600,000 doctors, nurses and scientists.

The UK Health Alliance on Climate Change (UKHACC), which includes the royal colleges of GPs, surgeons and nursing, the British Medical Association and the Faculty of Public Health, want a new clean air act to tackle sources of air pollution, which contributes to up to 40,000 deaths a year in Britain. In a report published today they note that Norway has pledged to ban the sale of conventional cars by 2025 and countries such as India have more ambitious plans for boosting sales of electric cars.
