After a record death toll yesterday, scientists fear that a new variant of the virus and less rigorous adherence to the rules means cases are unlikely to “peak”. Instead, they predict that cases will plateau at a high rate throughout winter.
The 1,325 reported deaths yesterday passed the 1,224 recorded on April 21.
