Earthquakes are hitting Surrey for the first time in 40 years, according to scientists who recorded two tremors in the county in one week.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.4 was recorded at 6.54am in the village of Newdigate yesterday morning, striking at a depth of three miles, the British Geological Survey (BGS) said. A 2.6 magnitude tremor had also hit the area at 1.30pm on Wednesday, causing “a few seconds of rumbling and shaking”. The earthquakes followed one on a similar scale in April.
Richard Luckett, a BGS seismologist, said that there was a “constant stream” of small earthquakes over most parts of the UK on a regular basis. “But what’s unusual is it is not at all normal for Surrey. There hasn’t
