Tips and picks

Tip of the week: Surface Pro bundle for $360 off!

Last week’s big Surface Pro sale is over. But this bundle is even better.

App pick of the week: Firefox 62

Suddenly with Edge-quality text rendering

Or… Chrome 69, now with the Material Design Refresh

Enterprise pick of the week: A bad start to the week for Azure, Office 365 users

When lightning strikes a datacenter, there’s a lot that can go wrong. And it did, this week, for Microsoft. Here’s what we know (and don’t) about the South Central US outage on Tues/Wed….

Small biz pick of the week: Adios, Microsoft Listings and Connections

Two SMB apps that Microsoft had added to some of its Office 365 SMB-focused subscriptions are going away with no explanation.

Beer pick of the week: Founders Brewing Double Trouble

Some beers change a lot from year to year. But this one, Founders’ DIPA called Double Trouble, is consistently solid, still hoppy enough to make this hop-head happy, and a late summer/early fall delight. Watch out, though: 9.4%. Don’t get in too much trouble!

Shoot – I almost always never miss a WW, but with Megan hosting I'll probably end up skipping this one.

In reply to MrKirbs:

Nope, I agree with @Jerryh. I can't stand when Megan hosts. It isn't just the Apple bias that is so apparent, but she does nothing to prepare to host the show. At one point this week she asked if Paul had something installed on his iPhone – and while I know he still has one for comparison purposes, his daily driver has been Android for more than 2 years now, I believe?

When Megan is the host I find it really frustrating, like Paul and MaryJo have to either a) take the time to explain everything to a fifth-grader, or b) feel compelled to make "switch to Apple" jokes. If they could get someone that doesn't have such a narrow, or frankly contrarian, focus, it would be much more enjoyable.

Or don't let Leo have vacations.

I love/hate WW and genarally catch it but, it often times is pretty negative and tough to sit through. I feel like if Google or Apple fans watched WW they'd be saying – Yeah, that's why I don't use MSFT. Just me I guess.

In reply to grantskinner:

I like WW the most out of all the show's Paul does, especially with his rapport with Leo. Mary Jo needs to use and try the products of the company she covers. She cracks me up at now many Microsoft things she DOESN'T use.

I used to like This Week in Google but it is like half politics, 1/4 tech and just 1/4 google.

In reply to grantskinner:

So you want a bunch of cheerleaders who only talk about the positive aspects of a company? I enjoy hearing the bad things from people who want a company/product to succeed.

In reply to lvthunder:

"a bunch of cheerleaders" is an over reaction!

No, that is why I said love/hate, the positive stuff, the real and constructive comments are all extremely useful. They can go on a bit with a negative tone.

I enjoy the episodes more when Paul and Mary Jo have a guest host. Megan & Father Robert are great change up from Leo every week.

Paul is getting pretty bad. Listening to him on here and in WTT it sounds as though he sees no need for competition with Google from anyone. Why would you use bing he asks? Why would you use apple maps or edge he asks? He is losing his mind. Why would you openly advocate against competition Paul? What is wrong with getting paid by MS to search the web with bing? I've used apple maps because I had no choice with carplay and found that it is really good and saved me a bunch of time by rerouting me in ways that Google never has. Just getting sick of it and really will only be watching this site because of Brad from here on out.
