Children as young as five have been caught with vapes or e-cigarettes in primary schools, an investigation has revealed.

At least 109 smoking devices were seized from pupils under 11 in the last academic year prompting charities to warn that MSPs must act to stem a “deeply concerning” rise in vape use among children.

Numbers rose from zero before 2021, to 80 in the 2021-22 school year. More than 600 vapes were confiscated in total in primary and secondary schools in Scotland.

The youngest child in the data was a five-year-old in Clackmannanshire, who had a vape confiscated in the 2021 academic year.

More than 70 devices were found by primary school teachers in South Ayrshire, the highest of any council, freedom of information requests
